Bracket 1
1. City Lights vs. 16. Brokeback Mountain
8. American Beauty vs. 9. Silence of the Lambs
5. The Night of the Hunter vs. 12. Apocalypse Now
4. The Big Lebowski vs. 13. Thelma and Louise
6. Audition vs. 11. Akira
3. Oldboy vs. 14. Tootsie
7. Star Wars Episode 5 vs. 10. Paper Moon
2. All About Eve vs. 15. Lawrence of Arabia

Bracket 1 Matchups will be voted on until July 3rd, giving us one month to see as many of these if necessary. Feel free to vote whenever, and feel free to edit votes and posts as more films are seen.

For example, right now I could only vote in 2 of these matchups since I've only seen both films in 2 of the matchups. In a month, hopefully it will give me time to see more.

I plan on staggering a few of the brackets, so the 2nd and 3rd brackets could be up fairly soon as well.

Bracket 1
1. City Lights vs. 16. Brokeback Mountain
8. American Beauty vs. 9. Silence of the Lambs

I voted for City Lights mainly because of the impact I believe the film had on film history. I wasn't a huge fan of either of these films but I still believe that a lot can be taken away from City Lights in terms of historical cinema. And who knows, with a rewatch of that, maybe it is even better than seeing it for the first time. The movie did seem like it was a bit outdated watching it now but the significance of it cannot be denied.

I voted for Silence of the Lambs mainly because it fricken rules. Anthony Hopkins gives you the most bang for your buck performance if that makes any sense, since he was actually only truly on screen for about 18 or so minutes (or so I've heard). And you can't ignore a big 5 Oscar sweep, regardless of whether or not you believe in the Oscars as a true barometer to American film success (yes, I said American). In American Beauty, there was a lot to be liked but there was also a sense of eerieness to a part of the film, which is maybe why some may like that film a bit better. But SOTL is easily in my top 25 of all-time, and it obviously gets my vote here.

nah, I just would like a majority of them to end at a different time, just so it truly isn't all done at once, if that makes any sense.

Not that I've checked or anything but I do want to re-emphasize only vote if you've seen both films! Thank you.

How many people are voting for the 'best' film and how many for which they prefer? Just wondering. For the record (and not that you'd expect anything else from me) I'm voting for the one I like the most.

I hope Empire manages to pull through, cos I'm not watching Paper Moon just so I can vote for it.

So you think SotL is a better film than AB? That's properly mental.

I'd prefer to watch SotL, so that's what I voted for. But I have no doubt that American Beauty (in terms of acting, direction, editing, cinematography, script, lighting, etc) is the 'better' film.

Sexy Celebrity

I must confess that the American Beauty vs. The Silence of the Lambs category was very tough and I ultimately decided on American Beauty because I gave it higher ranking on my Top 100 list and, frankly, I wanted it to continue on in hopes that it might win this entire game and give Harry a heart attack.

Yup, I figure on starting one new bracket every week, and then after that starting over. For example when Bracket 8 hits out a week after I'll do round 2 of Bracket 1. I think the staggering will help since we won't have everything going at the same time. It will give people time to watch some of the films too (if they even want to).

At the same time, nobody honestly expects "The Best" film to win. It will probably be one of the boards collective favorites or best, but just like a basketball or football tournament, not necessarily will the best team (or in this case, movie) win.

What with all the talk regarding the merits of comparing such films, and which are superior; I've voted for the movies I like most which funnily enough also happen to be the ones I think are better.

Incidentally I think the pairing of Oldboy and Tootsie is the most mismatched. I'm also struggling to comprehend how anyone can justify picking the overrated Oldboy (which decends into messy childish sentimentality and near farce for the final act) over the wonderfully charming and funny Tootsie (a film that comments on everything from transgender roles to feminism and media manipulation).

I'm also disappointed to see The Big Lebowski (a lovable endlessly quotable film to be sure) winning by a landslide over the quite superb Thelma & Louise.

P.S. I've never seen Paper Moon so The Empire Strikes Back wins by default. So frickin' sue me!

Watch it! Not sure if you specifically will like it, but I think it's some damn good Bogdanovich. Although, nowadays I'll take The Last Picture Show over it, back in the day it was the other way around.

I will pick up a copy becasue I love films set in the depression era, and the story sounds rather good. The cover reminds me of Allen's Sweet and Lowdown.

Scores so far in this bracket

City Lights (6 votes) vs. Gayback Mountain (3 votes)

American Beauty (5 votes) vs. Silence of the Lambs (10 votes)

The Night of the Hunter (5 votes) vs. Apocalypse Now (6 votes)

The Big Lebowski (10 votes) vs. Thelma and Louise (2 votes)

Audition (4 votes) vs. 11. Akira (3 votes)

Oldboy (6 votes) vs. Tootsie (4 votes)

Star Wars Episode 5 (4 votes) vs. Paper Moon (3 votes)

All About Eve (2 votes) vs. Lawrence of Arabia (7 votes)

Looks like Silence of the Lambs, The Big Lebowski and Lawrence of Arabia are definite locks. Looks like potential winner American Beauty is out of the race before it's really underway.

City Lights has opened up a considerable lead over Gayback Mountain, but it's still possible that Jake and Heath crawl their way back into the race. I will watch Gayback Mountain next week. Given that I don't think much of City Lights, so there's a good chance I'll vote for SC's favourite.

One of the biggest surprises to me is the close contest between Night of the Hunter and Apocalypse Now. I adore both films, but you have to conclude that it's very surprising that Night of the Hunter is doing so well against the # 14 film on MoFo's most recent Top 100. Night of the Hunter is a seminal film and the fact that it's in close contest with Apocalypse Now speaks volumes about the cinematic taste of the members on this board.

Other close contests are Audition - Akira, Oldboy - Tootsie and Star-Wars 5 - Paper Moon. I'm surprised that it's close between Star Wars and Paper Moon, especially when taking into account that Used Future's vote is actually invalid:

P.S. I've never seen Paper Moon so The Empire Strikes Back wins by default. So frickin' sue me!

So it's really 3-3, still everything to play for. Could The Empire Strikes Back get knocked out this soon?

Still a lot to win or lose in this bracket. This is more interesting than I figured it would be. Good job on the bracket system, Raul.

Eve and Arabia will more than likely get a vote from me yet. I've already seen Eve, now I've just got to see the 4 hour epic that is Arabia. you just seemed like you were all srs bznz, like voting for films based on what you thought would win vs. what you think should win.

i don't really think doing it this way does produce the most realistic results, but in turn it definitely does spark more discussion about the films. which is why we're all here to begin with, presumably.

anyway, it's fun. i've put 3 of the films next to get on Netflix.

*shrugs* It's a game. To me, getting all serious about the movies (watching everything -- I'm not putting off movies I've been planning to watch on my own just to watch the ones I haven't seen in this game) is a little much to me - at least, here in this game. I do think that prolonging this game and making it all about seeing films you haven't seen kinda makes it too sentimental and I think the overall effect might be dull and boring. I hate the idea of watching movies on an assignment, as if this is school or something -- which is why I think I'm gonna drop out of the Movie Trade-Off Game after this round. If I have to watch a movie when I'm not in the mood for it, I'm bound to not like the movie. I do not treat movies like required reading assignments or something. I treat them like medicine - meant to soothe the soul.

But this game has had a few laughs so far -- Oldboy vs. Tootsie, for starters.

it's from the film The Virgin Queen. she plays Queen Elizabeth I, who was mostly bald from a fever in childhood... i think. so maybe that's a bad bald cap. good film, though! she plays Queen Elizabeth in that other film you mentioned in the shoutbox, too. but she's young and pretty and sexual in that one, ain't she? she was old when she did The Virgin Queen, so she plays a dried up crusty Queen Elizabeth.

I think that's what edged it for Akira, the detail and scope of the animation. I could happily change my vote at any time, plus i'm a huge advocate of Miike and, objectively, it probably is the better film.

planet news
06-06-11, 04:32 PM
Miike's sheer precision in Audition is enough to put it over for me as one of the most masterful of his works, but Akira is so seminal, even in its class of apocalyptic sci-fi and is STILL visually unlike anything I've ever seen. Now if it was Gozu, that might be different story.

I've got a soft spot for Gozu, it's basically a mash of my 3 favourite filmmakers and is probably one of the films i've shown to the most amount of people but I don't think it scratches Audition in terms of craftmanship. City Lights 6
Brokeback Mountain 6

American Beauty 7
Silence of the Lambs 13

The Night of the Hunter 7
Apocalypse Now 8

The Big Lebowski 12
Thelma and Louise 3

Audition 4
Akira 6

Oldboy 9
Tootsie 6

Star Wars Episode 5- 6
Paper Moon 3

All About Eve 4
Lawrence of Arabia 9

All in all we've got some fairly close matchups here thus far, including one tie. There's still legitimately at least 6 matchups that could still be up in the air, and I'm sure that American Beauty could still garner some more votes. Though it is still pretty early The Big Lebowski has a fairly commanding lead.

But at least planet's example is a fine art. I believe it was NBC or maybe TBS who redubbed a line from Billy Wilder's The Front Page in the early '80s in which Walter Matthau spoke. It's kinda funny, now that I think of it, because of all the posts lately in the Abortion thread. Matthau says "son of a bitch" (obviously four syllables if you look at his lips) and it was dubbed as "son of a chimpanzee". Those last two syllables were damned funny in at least two ways. Three ways if you count the Abortion thread.

I love both Brokeback Mountain and City Lights... but have to go with Chaplin's best film. The ending is heartbreaking and a scathing commentary on how money and appearance influence people... no doubt it fit into CHaplin's own socialistic ideaology.

Because Lawrence of Arabia isn't boring at all.

Actually it's weird, I have the exact opposite opinion. I never really got why All About Eve was seen as so great.

American Beauty/Silence of the Lambs is a pretty tough call, but I really think that Beauty is a gem. That doesn't mean that Lambs isn't. It's a great movie as well. I guess I just think Beauty is a slight bit better than Lambs. VERY tough call though.

Okay heres the thing I honestly thought before I watched All About Eve and Lawrence of Arabia That I would like All About Eve better but Lawrence Of Arabia really surprised me.It was really hard voting for this One because I really liked both films, All About Eve was great and its a magnificent tale of ambition, manipulation and betrayal, The Dialog was superb and Bette Davis was amazing but Lawrence Of Arabia in my opinion was the better film it had a rich historical plot, vibrant characters, great setting, and plenty of fabulously choreographed battle scenes. I was really Impressed by both films but Lawrence really took me by surprise. If I had a top 100 list All About Eve would be on it and Lawrence would probably be in the top ten.

That, in technical terms, LoA is the better film. If I were constructing a "Best Film" list, LoA would be a higher than All About Eve. But I'd rather watch All About Eve, therefore, that's the one I voted for.

All About Eve vs. Lawrence of Arabia

The only new viewing which almost overturned me was All About Eve, which has such great cynicism about -- let's be honest -- the very industry that enabled its production, I couldn't help but love it for its boldness. The acting and narration and twists and turns were simply superb. But I do like the political aspects in Lawrence of Arabia a lot, though I can understand why people find it boring, since the entire first half of the film feels a bit aimless. Lawrence himself is an extremely aimless and weird person, and only by the end do we even begin to understand the conflicts inside of him. By painting him in as inconsistent a way as possible, I think the film remains strongly anti-colonialist. I also like Lawrence as this unwilling revolutionary who is called, not by himself, but by the very situation to fulfill his role.
