Have you really seen all 14 of those flicks?

Double Checked and shockingly yes. I think it's the first time that a list of films has been mentioned and I had seen all of them. I feel special :D haha.

despite his love for new movies, he voted for City Lights over Brokeback Mountain? someone is a homophobe.

I really wanted Tootsie to win. That's a shame.

You might wanna go cross out some films on your movie lists then.

I don't believe him either. I don't get why people have to lie about whether or not they've seen both. What good is it? And I don't want to have to judge whether or not I believe them all the time.

well, i think when you do believe a person has seen both, that person's votes should count twice as much!

No biggie. He made up for it in the other bracket voting for Good Burger over Chaplin's The Kid.

Not homophobic haha. I just thought Brokeback was boring and semi-pointless.

The only ones I didn't have crossed off were Tootsie and City Lights.

I just saw City Lights two days ago so I forgot to cross it off. As for Tootsie I don't know what happened, must have missed it when skimming through the lists.

Oh, I wouldn't say it was pointless....

But there could have been more sex between Heath and Jake.

You don't have to judge whether or not you believe people. I don't get why everyone is saying I am lying. On the other two brackets I left matches out because I didn't see some of those films. Why would I lie but only on this bracket?

Actually, if I may be honest, Jake wasn't the hotter cowboy in Brokeback Mountain. Heath Ledger was -- he wore better cowboy clothes and had the hottest accent ever.

They put Jake in darker clothes with a darker hat and I like my cowboys in more light colored clothing. So, I am kinda disappointed about that.

But, still, I liked watching Heath have his way with him in the tent -- I just wish there was more of it.

6 hours left to vote. So far we've had at least 33 people contribute to this so it seems to be working well with this style.

Brokeback Mountain had a point. It showed that gay people can fall in love and have turbulent relationships just like hetero people do.

If you mean for "mainstream" audiences, then that may be true, but that theme had been floating just "under the radar" for about 50 years in several significant films and longer than that in some "underground" ones.

Brokeback Mountain didn't even really start off as a mainstream movie just because of the homosexual content. I had to go see it at one select movie theatre in December 2005 just to watch it and then in another city I remember it was only at an arthouse movie theatre. I think it eventually went to more theatres - it made about 80 million, according to IMDB - but that was only because of its Academy Award nomination.

Yeah, I get you, mark. :) I'm not saying it was that groundbreaking. I'm sure other films have dealt with the subject similarly though I'm drawing a blank at the moment.

But it was a very polished and artistic treatment, I think.

A few films I would mention would be both Oscar Wilde films from 1960, Victim (those are all at least 50 years old) and then I'd have to break it down chronologically. Maybe, I can do that later, but my "other" family's calling...

Wow! That looks like the Brits were way more into opening the closet of "queer cinema" than us Yanks... like I didn't know that.

Well, I reckon time has run up for this round of bracket 1

Here are the results (winners in bold):

City Lights 12
Brokeback Mountain 7

American Beauty 16
Silence of the Lambs 17

Night of the Hunter 9
Apocalypse Now 14

Big Lebowski 19
Thelma and Louise 7

Audition 6
Akira 12

Oldboy 18
Tootsie 7

Star Wars Episode 5: 13
Paper Moon 5

All About Eve 7
Lawrence of Arabia 16

The matchup that garnered the most votes also happened to be the closest battle obviously between two highly liked contenders that got a rough matchup. Other than that Night of the Hunter was a potential sleeper to move on until Apocalypse Now got a slew of ending picks that helped it maintain its distance. Brokeback had a chance too at one point but Chaplin was too much to overcome. The Big Lebowski had the most amount of votes with 19.

The second round of this bracket will be soon to come and will have the following matchups:

City Lights vs. Silence of the Lambs
Apocalypse Now vs. Big Lebowski
Akira vs. Oldboy
Star Wars Episode 5 vs. Lawrence of Arabia

It's so disappointing to see American Beauty, Brokeback Mountain, and my Tootsie lose -- but, HEY, my Apocalypse Now WON! :highfive:

Tootsie will get her revenge one day, though. She has a score to settle.

There's always next time for Tootsie. After seeing Night of the Hunter, I really wish it was moving on, but it faced really stiff competition that could end up going a long way in this one.

I was afraid there was going to be a tie, but luckily it was settled beforehand, since I didn't set an official tie-breaking rule.

ash_is_the_gal
07-04-11, 02:45 AM
so what will happen when there is a tie?

MovieMan8877445
07-04-11, 02:46 AM
Why not a sudden death match?

rauldc14
07-04-11, 02:46 AM
The only truely fair idea I had was letting both move on and have a 3 way battle, though it could really complicate things.

I am open to any other suggestions, but I'm really hoping we never have to deal with it, though it could possibly happen.

A good thing that seems to be happening as the tournament goes on, is I'll be able to vote more and more. I've seen every film in the next bracket, except Akira.

ash_is_the_gal
07-04-11, 03:03 AM
in some ways i wish we had to vote privately. i think knowing which movie is winning does affect how some people will vote. it also affects what movies people will watch. for example, many people may have not bothered watching either of the films in the Children of Men/The Lady of Shanghai because CoM was so far ahead.
