What you need:

These all depends on what type of avatar you make.

There are trials with most any software, but don't load them, until you are ready to skip happy at it. You don't want to run out of time, and not get much done.

I bought these things . . .

Plextor Convert X (http://www.plextor.com/english/products/TV402U.htm)

to save the stills from my VHS. I doubt you have this problem. I've been collecting movies, longer than I care to remember. Also, there is no trial period for this one. It has hardware as well.

Corel InterVideo WinDVD Players (http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/us/en/Content/1152796555406)

A lot of the DVD software, we have for our computers, has the camera on them. You use that for snagging your screen-shots. I find that this one takes the pictures the fastest. I have yet to have to go back, and retake any. It snags every last screen shot from a scene, in one go. You just need an itchy trigger finger.

Corel Paint Shop Pro (http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/us/en/Product/1184951547051#tabview=tab6)

You only need this, when the pictures are too dark. Hit "One step photo fix", and that is usually all it takes to lighten it perfectly.

This is what puts them together.

Corel Animation Shop (http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/us/en/Product/1184951547051#tabview=tab6)

If you decide to buy Paint Shop Pro, don't buy the latest version. The older versions, not too old, come with Animation shop. I've read where the latest version of Paint Shop Pro does not have Animation Shop with it.

The New Real Player (http://www.real.com/)

These are FLV files, that have to be converted to an AVI file to play on your DVD software. You can use the trial download of . . .

Smart FLV Converter Pro (http://www.flvtoaviconverter.com/)

That only saves 70% of the video. If you use the free download, you can use this, if you only want something early on in the clip. You can also purchase this software, so there aren't any limited amounts. I normally use this, because it is quicker to do it myself, but if the clip that someone requests from an avatar is at the end of the video, then I send it off to be converted for free. I send them here . . .

Zamzar (http://zamzar.com/)

You have to have a URL, email address, and it takes them a few hours, etc . . . I will explain all of this in my "how to" post.

This makes it look like it takes forever to make them, but I can now toss one together in no time at all. It just takes a tad of practice.

Making avatars from on-line videos:

First, you download RealPlayer.

The New RealPlayer (http://www.real.com/)

Then you find whatever video you want, start it up, and at the top right corner, there will be this . . .

You click to download, and it stores them in your documents, in your "My Videos" folder. There will be a RealPlayer video folder in there.

Now, depending on whether or not you want the entire video, or just certain sections of it, you will have to convert the FLV file, to an AVI file. You can do this for free with this download, as long as you don't mind it only saving the first 70% of the video. You can get that software here . . .

Smart FLV Converter Pro (http://www.flvtoaviconverter.com/)

I plan on buying this software later on, because I sometimes need the entire clip. For now though, I can, and do send them off to this site for free . . .

Zamzar (http://zamzar.com/)

They can take hours to return the video to you, and sometimes it's not emailed back to you until the next day, depending on when you send it in. If you would prefer using them, instead of buying that software, this is how you use that site for converting your video files . . .

Go to Zamzar, and click on the 'download videos' tab. Take your You-tube URL address, and place it in the URL blank. Click the 'convert files' tab, and choose 'video formats' AVI. Then enter your email address, and click the 'convert' tab. Wait for it to load. I've done this. It does work, and it is safe. They email you the link for downloading your video. You only have 24 hours to save your video to your computer, unless you join.

Now, you open your video with your DVD software. Some of our hardware comes with this, but the reason I named WinDVD software, is because I know it comes with the camera icon, which is used for taking screen-shots of your movie. I now use the software that came with my burner. Many have the camera option. Just check what you normally watch your movies on, and see if it has this option. Once you get your video playing, and you are near the scene that you want, snap your mouse button as fast as you can, to take the screen-shots.

Now, open your Animation Shop, which has a free trial as well. Then click on the symbol for the animation wizard, which is right under the file tab. Then you set it up. Click "Same size as the first image frame", "Opaque", "Centered in the frame - With the canvas color", then check "Scale frames to fit". Click "Yes, repeat the animation indefinitely". With the "How long do you want each frame to be displayed?" I find that either 10, 20, or 30 works best for movie pictures. Test for best quality. Now you add your images. Click next, then finish, and you have your animation reel. Now you have to re-size it. Click on the animation tab, and then resize it. When you go to the "Animation" tab, and then click on resize, make sure the "Maintain aspect ratio of . . . " box is NOT checked. That way you can set your size to 110 width, by 90 height, or whatever works for you, and it won't force the one size to alter. You can test your avatar, before saving it to your computer, by clicking on the videotape icon, on the top right side of the task bar. It is beside the arrow cursor/question mark tab. It plays a review of your avatar.

Also, once you make all of these settings, the only thing you will ever have to change, is the images added for your next avatar, and the "time per frames", 10-20-30, etc.
It remembers everything else you set, even if you shutdown your computer.

Using your own movie collection:

You can do the same thing with your own DVDs. Find your scene, click your camera icon quickly, saving the pictures that you want. Then follow all the steps above.

With your VHS, you have to buy the hardware, which I linked you all to in the first post. It's the Plextor link. I bought mine for numerous other reasons, not related to avatars, but what do you know, it works for them as well. The Plextor comes with instructions, and then you simply follow the same steps that you did with the You-tube videos, and/or your DVDs.

Making avatars with your Jasc software:

OK, this is both Paint Shop Pro, and Animation Shop. There are numerous things to make, alter, add to photos, etc . . . There is a book that comes with this software, and many helpful sites on-line. Also, there are many downloads on-line. Some are free, some are not, but there are plenty that are. They cover such things as picture tubes, font, glitter tubes, adding animation - snow, rain, stars, etc . . .

Individual questions, I can answer. Writing everything I now know, down in here. I don't think so. ;)

You can make them 100%, using the tubes, fonts, and such. One example is the avatar I made for Pimpy . . .

Working with the clarity:

This was my avatar to begin with, using the original stills from my DVD.

This is after I took each still to Paint Shop Pro for some quick adjusting.

Whenever you have this problem, open each still one at a time with Paint Shop Pro. Then click on the "Enhance Photo" tab. Click on "One step photo fix." That normally fixes it.

If that doesn't work . . . sometimes they get too colorful . . . then try the "clarify" choice, or the "edge preserving" choice, etc . . . which are also in the "Enhance Photo" tab.

Also, at times, the picture can look grainy, or out of focus. Using Paint Shop Pro again, try using this step. Click the "Adjust" tab, then click on "Photo fix", and then click on "Digital camera noise removal". You can fiddle with the settings until you like it. There are many in that "adjust" section, like soften, sharpen, etc . . .

If you've ever wondered how all of those movie stars look so young in their photos. Welcome to the world of Jasc Software. :yup:

Sizing tips:

To make it larger, when your avatar is open like a film reel, crop any wide-screen shots. To do this, you click on the cropping icon. It's the fourth icon over, underneath "Zoom" on your tool-bar. Outline one of the photos with what all you want left in it, and then click the "Crop" tab.

Some of these are simply animated photos that I found on-line. You can alter them down by opening them in Animation Shop. Crop them, and then resize them like I showed you before. If the file size is still too large, you can delete enough scenes from the avatar, until it reaches the allowed file size for this board.

I've been asked by 5-6 people now, on how to make these. I didn't want to keep searching through the avatar thread, to find all of this information. It's scattered between a good 9 posts, and several pages. I believe I've covered the bulk of how to make them. If you have any questions, or problems, ask away. If you would still prefer that I make them, I am truly fine with that. Place your requests here.

I haven't decided just yet, but I will either post everything that I make in this thread, or I will create a Photobucket account for them. I dunno. We shall see. Until then, I have two requests that I'm running late on. You two let me know if I got the right scenes, made these right. More than likely something is off with them, some of them. Speak up. I'd rather know. The seconds on the videos, rarely ever match what the person tells me.

Yep, I was just working on them. The one avatar only had to lose about 4-6 stills. You can tell that I took them from the ending. The other one, though, is even larger in file size than B-card's was. There are ways to delete certain scenes, without it being obvious, to too obvious that any are missing. I'm going to go finish my outside work real fast, before Mother Nature turns her light-switch off, and then I'll be back.

OK, that one began at 1.61 MBs. We are allowed 241 KB. First off, I don't know if they edited that, or what, but he is looking in the one direction, and then that guy that is playing the guitar should be in the scene. After that, then he looks the other way. I cropped it, resized it to the 110 by 90 size, and then I deleted that extra bit at the beginning. It was still at 504 KB.

I deleted, and deleted. If I had kept deleting, until it reached the allowed size, there wouldn't be enough left for it to look good.
Then I wondered, how big would the file be if I snagged it from my own VHS copy. That same scene is only 285 KB, and loads brighter. Go figure!

Well, the entire scene is right at 4 minutes long. What is the allowed size on that forum? The file size, and pixel size?
Let me know the exact part that you want, the from start to finish time of that scene on that You-tube clock, and I will try to make it.
I said I would make these, so I don't like that I'm backing out over some gore. I'm not a fan of people who break their promises, anyway.

As far as the movie Goodfellas goes, see if you see that scene in this set of videos. You'll know it before I will.

OK I really want a cool avatar that moves......a pic of a girl or something cool!!!! I need a little help on this one!

I have numerous lady avatars. I will have them posted by late night tonight. They are from the old thread, but will be resized.

As far as this one, Sawman3, I have no clue where you guys keep going, but he's actually starting to make me laugh. Is that a good thing?!?

No worries. I saw it. I'll make it as well. I'm going back and forth from working in my house, and working on these.

LT, yep, I can find that easily. I have some, but they don't move. I will search on-line in a bit.

Also, when you all want certain types of avatars, it can help if you do an image search, and add GIF to whatever you type in for your search. Like mermaid pictures GIF . . .

OK, you disturbed, little man. You forgot to tell me the allowed size of that board. Here, it is 110 by 90, with a 241 KB allowed.

The wide-screen avatar is 303 KB. The other is 375 KB. If you want as much of that scene as possible, then I should delete screen-shots from the wide-screen version. Either way, let me know which one you want, whether you want more deleted from the beginning of the scene, or the end, and what that other message board allows.

Your old one should be on your computer wherever you stored it before you added it here. I keep mine in a graphics folder in My Documents. Although, if I added it for you, you won't have the graphic.

You can save any graphic online by simply right clicking on it and then clicking save image.

I had already saved him from a "favorite You-tube" post of 7thson's. I knew he'd come in handy. I went to get your video from my FlashPlayer folder, and there he was.
I seriously did make that face, followed by covering the video with my hand. I thought from the looks of it, that you wanted the beginning, just where he holds the lawn mower, and walks toward them. Once I realized I was wrong, it hit me, "Cover the video, but watch the timer." I made that thing, and I never had to watch it. I ***** you not!

I'll tell you what, this works because once I save them to my computer, the only thing I can see, is a still photo. The start of the avatar.

hehe I know. You've mentioned it before. Something tells me I wouldn't want to go to any of those boards.

Although, I do know of this one horror message board that you would love. It's like 20 plus boards, attached to one, because they have separate boards, for separate types of horror movies. From John Carpenter, Stephen King, foreign horror, and then all of those gore type movies that I avoid. There are many there. I haven't been to that board in forever. That one, or the classic horror board that I joined years ago. Hell, I don't have enough time to.

If I ever do get into another board, besides the two I am on now, it will be the Turner Classic Movies board. Are you yawning yet?!? ;)

Suffering and not up for a lengthy filming, Ford suggested that Indy make a gesture of weary exasperation, then shoot the attacking swordsman instead. Turned out to be a legendary scene.

Yeah completely. I do alot of improv myself. Take classes at the Groundlings, captain of my improv team in high school. Some of the stuff that comes out when u go for it are pure gold. Really fun. All of Christopher Guest's movies are fully improvised. Its pretty amazing.

Just so all of you know, in case any of you want to make them like I do, using these You-tube video. You can't just convert them (70% with that trial download, 100% if you buy it, or 100% for free, through Zamzar.com), and then simply make them. You will then need a movie player that takes stills, and also the Animation Shop. I posted links to these site, in my first posts of this thread. They should have trial versions, and I also posted steps on how to make these. I typed the instructions out, step by step, while I made one. You shouldn't have any problems, but if you do, just get back with me.

Thanks Nebbit. I had a bad reaction to a prescription. I didn't sleep for two days, and then I got real sick on it. I slept a good 4 hours when I got home, and then another 6 hours, later last night. I still hurt from it, but I think it is starting to ease off some. It was that stupid Prednisone. It hurt like f@cking sin.

I'm sure you guys have guessed . . . Your avatars will be done at a later date.

OK guys. I'll be making these in between cooking some chops. Not that that's important. hehe

I'm doing better. Thanks for asking. I'm also pretty excited, because they finally got my MRI scheduled. After much on-line medical studying, my vote goes to this being herniated discs, with pinched nerves. I feel very certain. He wants to rule out anything else, to be on the safe side, but he also feels pretty sure it's a spine injury. I already told my doctor there won't be any therapy, caudal blocks, medications, etc . . . Just roll my ass into surgery, and let's end this thing once and for all. I am so tired of the pain.

I'm trying to not seem rude, but you are making it a tad hard. One, stop quoting those huge posts, please. You don't need to do that, just to ask me something. Two, you need to read all of my new posts in this thread, every time you come back on, and not just my very last post. (If I am making avatars for you.) I may be talking to you, and since I am making these for you, it would help me a lot if you would catch the questions that are for you. That question up above was right on this page. I'm asking you all to do things like write down the time of the video scenes that you want, etc, because it saves me a tad bit of time. Doing the photo fixes, so that your avatars are not black boxes, takes some time to do. More than you know, I suppose.

I don't mean to be paranoid about your intentions, but you have made the exact same post three times now. I think you did that earlier in this thread, as well. It simply makes me wonder.

OK guys, so far I am not liking these that much. Maybe a part of it is because I've never seen The Boondock Saints. It just seems so fast. If I slow the fight down, then they move too slow at the start of it. I don't know.

Be honest on whether you hate them, or not. It won't bug me any. Especially since I just said that I'm not too fond of them.

Martian... do you see the little thumb-up and thumb-down along the black bar above each post? They're for giving positive or negative reputation points. Basically, the idea here is that you give positive reputation for interesting, well-thought out contributions, or something you approve of, etc. Des is doing a lot of work for you here, so I think it would probably be a good idea to click on that upward facing thumb above any post where she helped you out. A last thing: I'm sure your avatars are coming along fine. Des will update you when they're finished.

Anyway, I quite like the Boondock one Des... what don't you like about it besides the speed :confused:

There's a little icon that looks like a person next to each poster's name. If it's green, they're online. If it's red, they're not. However, if you never log out, like me, then sometimes it seems to turn red even when I'm online :p

Once you sign in, it is green. If you don't move for 15, or 20 minutes, you appear off-line/red. I however, am set for the invisible mode. I'm always red. ;)

Edit:

I forgot to add, I had to deal with some problems today, and after 100 phone calls, I am getting scanned, my MRI, at 6:45 in the morning. That is too early for me to worry about going to bed, so I'm staying up all night.

For starters, I already knew what you wanted on all of them but one. I only asked for the timing on that one. I've said that I get what you want. I also told you to stop reposting these instructions over and over again. I am hardly that stupid.

They are right. I have made quite a few of these for you, already. I'll make these last few, because I said I would, but then I need to take a Martian break for a bit.

You need to understand that once I have to alter the coloring in every still, the time to make these becomes a lot longer. If I have to do this, or if I have other problems, I'm not going to be able to sit here until I get them all done. Not to mention, I like taking breaks, and doing other things, as well.

Yes, honestly it is wrong. I am making these as a favor, so it isn't something I should be graded on, timed, or checked on. That's how one would treat an employee.

This thread was my idea, to help those who want to make avatars on their own, or to make avatars for those who don't want to learn how.

The best way to deal with this from now on, is for you to simply ask one time, and then patiently wait. I'd like for this silly problem to end. OK?

That's the avatar I made a while back. It was too dark, and too large of a file size. I deleted a few stills, to make it the accurate file size, and then I lightened each and every still, so that it was easier to see. It's the avatar that you are using right now.

OK, the herniated disc isn't significant enough to be causing me this much pain, and/or trouble walking. Neither is the curve.

He is dropping me back to that much smaller dose of Steroids, and if it helps me like it did last year, then fine, I'll start doing the therapy again. If it doesn't, and instead causes me more pain like that last steroid did, then I am to go to a Neurologist. I studied so much medical crap these past two years. I have an idea, but I don't totally know what all a Neurologist does. I'll look it up later. I'm honestly over all this *****. Whatever it is, it isn't going to kill me, so f@ck it! :D

Sizing tips:

To make it larger, when your avatar is open like a film reel, crop any wide-screen shots. To do this, you click on the cropping icon. It's the fourth icon over, underneath "Zoom" on your tool-bar. Outline one of the photos with what all you want left in it, and then click the "Crop" tab.

OK, this is it. I left out that when you do outline one of the photos with what all you want left in it, and then click the "Crop" tab, that it does all of them at once. So make sure that you keep it right in the lines.

Crop it, and then resize it. Those instruction are also on the first page.
