View Full Version : What's With The Name?
The Silver Bullet
01-20-02, 09:31 PM
A lot of us [well, some of us] have names that differ to our actual names here on MoFo. The other day Toose gave us the meaning of his, and it got me wondering. Why the alias that we have? Why any other nicknames we may have been given, and why?
Here's my list of both Internet Aliases, and nicknames:
The Silver Bullet
This is my main one. My favorite film is Snatch and in that film you have two characters with "Bullet" in the name -- Bullet Tooth Tony and Boris the Bullet Dodger . I decided that I'd nickname myself with this quirk -- and so I did. Now a lot more people actually call me SB or Silver Bullet than you'd think, especially teachers. Smashed [ http://www.smashed-theplay.com ] really confirmed it, because me and the director [a teacher, and one of my best friends] put Matt "The Silver Bullet" Clayfield in all the programs.
[B]The ClayMan
This one's pretty old. I don't know why people still call me this [probably because my MSN adress is
[email protected]] but I still get it a bit. This one was sort of my choice too, I guess, though not as much. My first little short film I made with my friend and me made it under the banner of ClayMan Productions -- Clay from my last name and Man from his [Maney]. So yeah.
Felix
I get this one a bit still also, and I still call myself Felix on occasions. I'm a Catholic and to make my Grandma happy [it didn't both me much] I did my confirmation, which is sort of initiation into the Church. I chose the name of a Saint [as is customary] and as a joke, sort of, I chose Saint Felix. My alias for nearly a year was Felix.
MattL's
This is the only one I've never used on the Internet and I had no part in coming up with. When I was about ten I was in a friend's pool and the little girl was wanting to jump in, but she wanted someone to catch her and so they're all going "Matt'll catch you! Matt'll catch you!" and she jumped in and I caught her and she got out and wanted to jump in again and they're all going 'Matt'll catch you!! Matt'll catch you!!" and she said "I don't want Matt'll to catch me this time." This was then used by everyone and my Mum told the story to all. It developed the S I don't know how. But it did.
I'm spent.
What about you?

Well, mine was originally SpdRcr meaning Speed Racer. A former member dubbed me Spud and the name stuck.
I only went by Speed Racer simply because, well I drive like I'm in a race, and I drive fast.

Plus you've always got a beenie-wearin' monkey in your trunk.
William Holden (http://web.ukonline.co.uk/wildbunch/images/pike2.jpg)'s character in Peckinpah's masterpiece The Wild Bunch (http://web.ukonline.co.uk/wildbunch/images/wildfoto.jpg) (1969) is Pike (http://web.ukonline.co.uk/wildbunch/images/shot.jpg) Bishop.
well, aside from my "oh so unique screen name" being so usefull in the world of food......hamburger pattie, beef pattie, mint pattie, peppermint pattie..............it just seems to sing, doesn't it? so melliflous. :yup:............:nope:

The only problem with keeping a beanie-wearin' monkey in my trunk is that, I don't have a trunk. :D I drive a truck. So I guess you could say I have a beanie-wearin monkey in my TRUCK.
Wow, now I know this site has indeed been around the block a few times: we're starting to run out of ideas for threads...we've batted around, and we're back at the top of the order. Behold, another thread on this same subject...only much, much older. :)
http://www.movieforums.net/showthread.php?threadid=532
Anyway, I think I like this new one better.
The meaning of my username: it stems from my old baseball site -- which was essentially the first "real" site I ever made. "TWT" is an acronym for the site's eventual name, "The Warning Track." "Commish" is obviously short for "Commissioner." See, instead of referring to myself as the "owner" of the site, I went with "Commissioner" of the site as a half-joke, seeing as how MLB doesn't have an Owner/President/CEO, but a Commissioner instead. I used the phrase "TWTCommish" early on as an AIM screen name, and it sort of stuck.
I started using it on various forums, and, well, I'm still using it (obviously). To be honest, I'd like to change it, but seeing as how I've got what must be at LEAST 13,000 posts on various forums over the Internet under this username, it's really too late to go back...it's not worth the effort of becoming known under that new name. Too many people know me by this name, even if it is outdated. Ironically, I switched my AIM screen name to "WarningTrack" somewhat early on, and still use it. Freaky.
mecurdius
01-21-02, 02:31 AM
in seventh grade gundam wing was really popular and one of the giant robots was named "mecuryius" but these two anime freaks thought it was mecurdius and they gave me and my friends all these anime names and they called me that, so it stuck.

Sorry about rehashing the thread, bit of an accident -- i'm still relativley new.
How many BB's are you a member of TWT?
Dozens, I'd imagine...I only frequent a few, though. I've got nearly 5,000 here (keep in mind that the 4,000+ do not count my posts in the "Intermission" forum). I've got something like 5,300 on SitePointForums.com (http://www.sitepointforums.com), too. Been a member there for over 2 years...though I don't post as regularly as I used to. I've got a few hundred on the eDevCafe Forums (http://forums.edevcafe.com), too...though, again, my post count there is lower than my actual post total.

Don't our posts get counted in here? Never noticed that, although I think it's a good idea.
I've been a member of only a few places. I've been a member here for quite a while now, although sometimes I gotta say I still feel entirely like a Newbie, other times like an old hand. I originally came to post once about Racism in Animated films [I was doing a project on Disney, and in a search the Best Animated Film thread came up]. Why'd I stay? I don't really know. I think it was the people, moreso than the content which is weird. Sades was the most welcoming member of any board I've ever been a member of. Holden pissed me off, until I realised that was the point, and I used to fight with you [T] something chronic, until I realised that was the point. It's been fun.
I'm also a member of Indie Film North (http://www.indiefilmnorth.com), where I'm a mod. The thing with that place is, it took me three goes on Indie Filmmaking Boards to get it right. The first I was a member of closed, the second went corrupt and when me and five others found out the crap the admin was pulling [he was two members, one which he used to absoloutley pay out and treat the members he hated like dirt -- we first started to catch on when this behavior was never frowned upon, and the meber was never booted]. The five of us tried to make our own site, but we got bored, basically, and wound up at IFN. I was a mod within two months, I think and now I'm probably the third most prolific poster. It's nowhere near as big as this place, but I love it. Basically, the other two boards were "How Not To Run A Bulletin Board" and I have so much archived posts and letters and e-mails that would make you thank God, Allah, Bhudda -- all of them, for MoFo [or IFN!].
And I'm done.

I always feared "Silver Bullet" referred to a dependancy on Coors Beer. I'm glad to find out otherwise.
And just for anyone so out of it they don't know, HERE (http://i.imdb.com/Photos/Ss/0047396/6) is a clue as to whom L.B. Jeffries really is.

They used to have clans - I was with Reservoir Dogs, all colours were taken so Mr.Silver was mine :) But then the clan died and I got picked up by another - some other gangster one - you had Tony Montana, Don Corleone, I had just seen goodfellas...sooo...(what a hard one to figure out!) But at the same time everyone was called goodfella, and thanks to my bad spelling goodf3lla it became... and been so ever since...how sad!

You've all had some pretty screwed up ideas of what my name means haven't you?
Silver, i , too, thought of the werewolf.............and worried, as did holden, that you were a Coors drinker (not really ).
Mercurdius- i love your screen name.
Holden, i didn't know where your's came from, but it is very Hollywood. not that you're "Hollywood", but it definitely seems to fit you.
Spud, i liked speedracer.........but now could never think of you as anything but Spud.

Silver, man. Silver kills a werewolf. A silver knife, or a silver stake, or a gun, with a silver grip ("you're insane"). Anyway, I figured it was just some odd nickname or something that happened to stick.

Oh, I see. I thought you talking about a person being NAMED Silver. My God. Anything that is silver can kill a werewolf? And therefore I slay werewolves....
I don't know wether to be flattered [that I could kill a werewolf] or disillusioned [that you would think that someone of my mental capacity [!] would name themselves after an implement for destroying mythical creatures].
I honestly thought you were talking about some sort of myth or legend or folklore tale. My God I'm slow.

There's a movie "CALLED" The Silver Bullet and it's adapted from a Stephen King noval. In the film there's a kid who is wheelchair bound (Corey Haim). He gets a super frickin crazy fast engine operated motorcycle type looking wheelchair from his uncle (Gary Busey) that I think is properly "NAMED" The Silver Bullet well at least that's what I call it. Alos he gets silver Bullet's too. I don't know what the others were talking about but in my posted this is what I meant I thought you got it I guess I was wrong sorry about that should have explained it more properly.

FUNNIEST MOVIE SCENE INVOLVING A SILVER BULLET
Love at First Bite (1979)
When the jealous Dr. Jeffrey Rosenberg Van Helsing (Richard Benjamin) confronts the creature Count Dracula (George Hamilton) that has stolen the heart of his girl (Susan Saint James), firing off a couple rounds to no effect. "That's only good for werewolves". In another scene he also mistakenly tries to ward him off using a Jewish star of David instead of a cross.
that was a perfect vehicle for George Hamilton!
and whatever happened to Susan St. James?.....i was a fan of McMillan and Wife way back when.
Holden Pike
01-22-02, 06:08 PM
Susan Saint James had a decent-sized hit with the sitcom "Kate & Allie" in the '80s, co-starring Jane Curtain. But since then she's more or less retired from show business. She did show up on the sitcom "The Drew Carey Show" playing Kate's hot mother, who all the fellas have crushes on. The actress who plays Kate on that show, Christa Miller, is her niece in real life.
Never much cared for "McMillan & Wife" (http://www.whatsdougupto.com/ssj/images/ssj326.jpg) myself.
that's my favorite type of show.......although some aren't very good. i loved Moonlighting when it was first out. Columbo never does me wrong.
.....liked Barnaby Jones back in his day too. Anybody remember Ellory Queen?
and Holden, i'm sure you were a fan of this old series.........Nightstalker? The X-Files predecessor.....both faves of mine.
p.s. i knew St. James was in Kate and Ally........was glad to see Jane Curtain in something because i had liked her so much on SNL.
Holden Pike
01-22-02, 10:46 PM
I love Darren McGavin, but I never much cared for Kolchak. I've tried to get into it, just can't. But then I don't care about "The X-Files" at all either.
"Moonlighting" is one of my all-time favorite shows, but I never, ever watched "Barnaby Jones" or "Ellery Queen" or "Quincy" or "Mannix" or "Cannon" or "Hart to Hart". I don't like the format for the format, I only like it for the personalities driving the particular show.
That's why "The Rockford Files" is my number one all-time favorite show. Yeah, a mystery was ostensibly solved every episode, but who cares? It was about Jimmy and Rocky and Angel and Dennis and Beth interacting week to week. The plots don't even really matter. Love "Moonlighting" and like "Columbo" for the same reason, because the central characters interest me, not the plots.
yes, i would agree......it is the characters who i love, not so much the format. :yup:
i liked The Rockford Files too- i'd forgotten about that one until you mentioned it, Holden.
Kolchak was silly and predictable but it was the only show dealing with that scary stuff i so loved! ....... mythical beasts, real ghosts, vampires, werewolves, zombies, and the one guy who was a believer - and foolishly in chase of proof!!

It's pretty funny, I think :D
Monkeypunch
06-30-02, 07:46 PM
I got my bizarre handle from the creator of the Japanese cartoon Lupin III, about a clever jewel thief. They made a movie based on the show, titled Castle of Cagliostro, which was really cool. Monkeypunch is not his real name either. I chose it because I like both the man's work, and monkeys. (Planet of the Apes, Mojo Jojo, King Kong, Mighty Joe Young, Lancelot Link: Secret Chimp...Once you go ape, you'll never escape! :D )
Mary Loquacious
06-30-02, 08:15 PM
My handle comes from the great Terry Pratchett/Neil Gaiman book Good Omens (think Monty Python does the Apocalypse). Sister Mary Loquacious is a Satanic nun in the Order of St. Beryl--Beryl herself was a young woman who chattered incessantly and became a martyr when she was strangled by her husband on their wedding night... maybe. The good sisters are bound to speak at all times, except for one hour of the day when they are allowed to shut up.
Sister Mary Loquacious herself has a pivotal role in the book--she misplaces the infant Antichrist. Being that my name is also Mary, and I too have a tendency to, a) talk an awful lot, and b) lose things, I found a certain kinship with her. :D

And you have heard that Python alum, the brilliant Terry Gilliam, is adapting it for the big screen, right? Still in pre-production and searching for financing (the same old Gilliam saga), but if all goes well it could be in the multiplexes by the end of 2003.

I have, indeed--been keeping tabs on the progress for awhile--and I salivate at the thought of seeing it as early as 2003. :yup:

It's funny about Mary Locquacious. I had just finished reading "Good Omens", and loved it. So I started another Neil Gaiman book called "American Gods". The main character in the book read "Truths" by Herodotus, and drew a lot from it. So I read Herodotus' "History", and WA-LAA!

Samsonite Delilah is a pun I stole from John Leguizamo, from a moment in his one-man show, Fream, when his father is yelling at his mother. He calls her a 'samsonite delilah' and storms out of the house. I love the accidental comparison to a brand of luggage revered for standing up to misuse and not breaking.
HellboyUnleashed
11-30-05, 11:01 AM
my name comes originally from the movie Hellboy. I figured he was unleashed on evil and it sounded coo at the time and then i revised it to being two of my favorite movies. Hellboy and Unleashed.
My name comes from a Robert Jordan fantasy series that I actually don't really like anymore. The Aes Sedai were sort of Sorcerers in The Wheel of Time saga. Unfortunately, after book six, the series turned to ****, and I stopped reading it after eight, as I just couldn't take it anymore.
I don't know, I should probably come up with a new handle, but I am known as Sedai all over the web, and it would be a pain changing everything over...
"Sleezy" is an old nickname. I didn't get it for my demeanor, though (I am actually an extremely nice guy :)). I got it from some marketing letter I received in the mail once, where someone had mispelled my last name. Since my last name is extremely uncommon, credit card companies trying to get my business usually screw my name up: I've had some pretty funny ones over the years. "Sleezy" was the wildest, by far, and a friend obsessed with calling people by nicknames started calling me that. The name stuck for a long time, but nobody really calls me that anymore.
Elsewhere, I go by "The Grey Ghost." It's not a nickname so much as an identity (almost a pen name).

Iroquois
11-30-05, 10:28 PM
My initial inspiration for the name Iroquois came from one of my favourite PlayStation 2 games of the time, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. Early on in the main part of the game, your character Raiden encounters the sole survivor of a massacre. The survivor is really Solid Snake, hero of the MGS series, but here he gives his name as being...
"Pliskin. Iroquois Pliskin. Lieutenant Junior Grade."
http://www.ssnake.free.fr/Pliskin_01.jpg
When I was offered the chance to change my name on a different forum, the first name that came into my head was "Iroquois". It was noice, different, unusual. Since then, I learned that it was an Indian word for "snake". "Snake" is an unoriginal net name, so Iroquois was an interesting spin on that.
Hence, Iroquois.
Other names I have used over the years include
Wardie/Wardster (nicknames playing off my real name)
Mr. Red (when I first joined MoFo, I used this name, made 20 posts, decided I didn't like it and rejoined as Iroquois)
Solidus (also from MGS2, I used this for a while before changing again)
My name comes from a Robert Jordan fantasy series that I actually don't really like anymore. The Aes Sedai were sort of Sorcerers in The Wheel of Time saga. Unfortunately, after book six, the series turned to ****, and I stopped reading it after eight, as I just couldn't take it anymore.
