Annie, you should so use a pop-up blocker. Google toolbar has one. So do others (Yahoo, I think). All free, and all work quite well. This site alone gets so many pop-ups, but the blockers keep them all away. Once you tweak it to allow pop-ups on certain sites (such as PMs in separate windows), it's a great thing to have.

Tell the guy...last you heard when someone did the miracle bit, they put him up on two large popsicle sticks and you're not going out like that.

Also, tell him that an octopus cannot travel at the speed of light. I mean, really.... A squid, maybe, but not an octopus.

I understand the frustration a person gets when their computer does not work correctly, I really do. I do not understand however why it is my fault that the computer guy who built it in a different state like 1,000 miles away did not know what they were doing. I usually bite my tongue as I am getting berated for someon elses mistakes. SO i came here to complain, and scream::::

Now I feel sick to my distended stomach and totally blame the person who dropped the coupon...and Burger King. The last time I went to McDonald’s I got my usual: "Chicken” McNuggets Happy Meal (I tell them I have a kid in the car) with a diet coke, shamrock shake (No matter what time of year it is, I still ask for it) and McDonaldland cookies. I can't do that fast food stuff myself. When I was little...no problems. Now it all makes me sick.

Taco bell and McDonalds both hit me hard, but Burger King is cool. They don't process their beef like the other two.

I have been racking my brain wondering... I once read that Dali was going to work on a film to do some srt direction or perhaps play a character on a pretty famous film, but ended up wanting so much money, he got tossed off the project. Anyone remember what it was? Was it Strangelove? I keep wanting to say it was that, but can't remember!

McDonalds offers scholarships to every minority group in the US except Native Americans… their excuse for excluding them is that they had to prioritize their money and that they felt like African American, Hispanic American, and Asian American students needs were greater then American Indians…

Dali worked with Disney on an animated film in the 1940's that was only recently finished… apparently Disney originally scraped the project in favor of making war propaganda films instead… and Dali's sketches were locked away in the vault. In the early 90's, Dali's work increased significantly in value and Disney was advised that they did not legally own any of the sketches unless the film they were made for was completed…

Dali also worked for Hitchcock and actually painted The Temptation of St. Anthony for a contest Hitchcock was holding…

He did the design of the dream sequences in Spellbound (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0038109/) and Father of the Bride (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042451/) .

I can't believe I sat through Father of the Bride just to watch the dream sequence.

I liked Spellbound.

PostScript, I got a complaint.

The phrase 'grilled to perfection.'

What the hell does that mean?

Who sets the standard for grilling?

If it's grilled to perfection, God must set the standard.

...and the Lord spoketh saying "thou stall grill ten minutes for every inch of thickness, in thy name."

Something tells me there is more to this story than just this. Feels like a crucial piece is missing....

Sorry, I somehow overlooked this post earlier… I'm not sure what crucial piece of the story you feel is missing… … but in the United States there are four racial/ethnic minority groups: African Americans, American Indians-Alaska Natives, Asian Americans-Pacific Islanders, and Hispanics.

As I stated earlier, of those four racial/ethnic minority groups, McDonald's Charities (http://www.rmhc.org/mission/scholarships/index.html) only offer scholarships to three -- African Americans, Asian Americans, and Hispanics… and when confronted about the exclusion of Native Americans, a spokesperson for the company stated the exclusion was not a mistake because they felt like the needs of African, Hispanic, and Asian American students were greater then those of Native Americans… Yet, statically, of those four minority groups, Native Americans have the highest poverty rate in the nation with 41% earning less then $25,000 yearly… and approximately only 2.1% of Native American children even attend college.

I can only guess as to the actual whys of McDonald's policy toward Native Americans… but in 2003-2004, McDonald's Charities donated over $1.3 million dollars in scholarship funds to African American students, over $600,000 in scholarship funds to Asian American students, over $2 million in scholarship funds to Hispanic students, and $0 dollars to Native American students…

The world seems to have gone mad recently, who decides who is worthy and who is not when it comes to charity and its distribution?
In Scotland, a child help line for abused children is facing closure due to lack of contribution, a knock on effect of last year's Tsunami. Oxfam in Scotland reached its target for the Tsunami, and subsequently stopped collecting, like the child line these causes need continual support, but it seems to be getting harder to raise the required funds. Meanwhile our Government blows millions of pounds on Millenium Domes, and Scottish Parliment buildings, and occasionaly forgets to spend the odd 10 million pounds on health and education.
Makes my blood boil to see the amount of money spent on the Scottish Parliament building, close to £250 million pounds, meanwhile our hospitals are facing cutbacks and closures, and worthwhile charities are fighting to get every penny they can.
Sorry, not a very specific complaint, but I just read today that each person in Scotland could have recieved £500 rebate from the Government due to money unspent on such basic things as health, education and charities.

Tacitus, I have the same sort of problem. You see I am quite large breasted and in order for me to buy a top to fit over them I need to go shop in the plus size section where most of the clothes are gaudy or for older people. I usually end up buying xx-large mens t-shirts and sweaters. But also when I buy these they are miles too long in the sleeves and the t-shirt ends up looking like long sleeves that are a little too short most of the time lol. Plus the oversized tops make me look 10 lbs heavier. I have thought about a breast reduction but I haven't got the money and since it isn't causing medical problems, it is not covered on the Canadian health plan :( Why can't designers make clothes for large breasted women that are nice looking, fit properly, and as cheap as average breasted women. I don't have the money to spend on my own personal designer.

You know those little plastic things they put through new hats and gloves and stuff?

Those things you have to cut, but then you either drop one of the ends on your carpet, only to find it months later when you unintentionally step on it and yell all forms of obscenities at the sheer lunacy that a little plastic thing can hurt your naked foot THAT F---ING MUCH...

...or you try to bend it with your fingers that are always too big, and one end slips between the fabric lining of the hat or whatever, lodging itself there - so that no matter what you do (short of ripping the damn thing open), you'll never EVER get it out, and you'll constantly think about whether or not you'll turn your neck just right one day, and that thing will poke through the lining and into your skull, like it's a loaded gun just waiting to have its trigger pulled...

We offered kindly to donate them Calais
And all they gave us back was the bidet
And now they won't let us go on holiday
They bottle bath-water [or 7 Up] and call it Perrier
They eat poor froggie's legs then throw the rest away
They even like the look of Johnny Holliday
They eat raw garlic and invented croquet
They think the height of chic is John Paul Gautier
That's why I hate the French, mmm,
That's why I hate the French

They all wear berets and they're all called Jacques,
They even steal from us the words they lack
Le weekend, Le Camping and cul de sac
That's why I hate the French, oh,
That's why I hate the French.

They claim their films are the best we've ever had
Well I suppose Emmannuelle wasn't bad
All their songs sound more or less the same
La la la la la la la la.........je t'aime
Charles Aznavour is always so depressed
Wouldn't you be if oui oui meant yes?

Sacha Distel has raindrops falling on his head
I wonder if Jean Paul Sartre knows he is dead
What I resent is that they're so good in bed
That's why I hate the French, oh,
That's why I hate the French.

They bake their bread in such a naughty shape
They brag about their wine and worship the grape
They criticise our food but then they eat crepe
That's why I hate the French, oh,
That's why I hate the French.

And now they started coming here in droves
French cigarettes, French letters and French clothes
For breakfast they have croissant or French toast
And there's always some French letters in the post
I'm sick and tired of eating all this brie
A day trip to Boulougne is fine by me
And I'll be buggered if I go to gay Paris.

They're pretty cocky 'bout their games in the dark
They think with girls they light a special spark
But look what the bastards did to Joan of Arc
That's why I hate the French, oh,
That's why I hate the French, mmm,
That's why I hate the French.

Poor Gummy :(

Nebbs, you are a doll!

The complaint I promised about my boyfriend....

He has been depressed lately. His depression leads to rage. You can imagine how I get caught in the cross fire when he yells at the sink full of dirty dishes (which he dirtied and promised to wash).

He has also been angry about his work taking shifts away and then replacing them with shifts back to back. So lately he's been working 16 hour days when he is not at school. When he gets home at 3:00 in the morning, he pops open a beer, then another and another and wakes me up at 6:00 in the morning (two hours early) and then pukes in the sink.

If thats not bad enough he will sometimes decide to cook when he's drunk and once he set fire to the oven. If he's not setting a fire, he is making a huge mess in the kitchen....then yells about the mess when he wakes up at 4:00 the next afternoon.

The days he is off work, he's at school. Then he comes home and complains about his classmates or a professor or a grade.

What pisses me off the most is actually aimed at myself. With all his reclessness, he still manages to pull off an A- average at school. I struggle to keep a B average and I am at a point where I am happy to recieve a C or a D. I guess I am jeolous that he can drink and stay up to all hours and do 50 things at once and manage to keep an almost perfect achedemic record.

His yelling gets me angry and then my anger turns to depression. So then I am in bed 24 hours a day, while he is a tornado outside the bedroom door with his depression.

This is a common thing in the gummo household. But it's not always like this. When he starts lifting out of his depression he is a pleasure to be around. It is just that I wish the bad parts would stay away for longer than a day or two at a time. The good stuff should stay for more than a day or two every 2 weeks...

Anyway, there is my complaint..

and when you try to talk some sense to them, although they're supposed to be an adult, they figuratively stick their fingers in their ears and blurt sarcasm all over the place as if they're still right and it's a-ok to be verbally abusive. on a board. which is supposed to be the kind of place that kinda thing doesn't happen. cuz you learn not to do it in kindergarten. where they teach you basic respect for other people, whether or not you agree with anything they've said or done.

so while i let this jerk know i didn't approve, in restrained english, he responded with unnecessary vitriol. the irony being that he probably said it all thinking it's no big deal, i can vomit crap all over somebody and it's perfectly fine.

nebbs - that is so true, re: not depending on another for your happiness. i can't tell you many friends of mine suffer and complain about their unhappiness and how they "want to be with someone."

I'm like, how will that solve anything? nada! they will be responsible for your happiness and you won't ever fix your own internal issues so THEY will end up unhappy. needing someone else is a default mechanism - the issues in our lives, how we have our parents provide emotional support, and then dating young and sorta just finding it easy to float from relationship to relationship - these are things that never allow us to grow.

You need to be able to be alone, and fine with it. IDEALLY we want to be with someone, but you can't be so general. you have to be with someone who complements you. and you complement them. you both have a fair exchange of energy, no one is the "supporter" while the otherone runs around happy and carefree. that's not fair at all. and the only way to be with someone YOU complement (and vice versa) is to be as fully developed and whole as possible.

you need to be comfortable ON YOUR OWN. no holes, no damage unhealed, no issues unresolved. of course, that's practically impossible, but you should at least be OK with who and what you are in general, love yourself, be good to yourself. depend on yourself - and no one else - for happiness.

here's a silly example off the top of my head - if you think of yin and yang, and those two shapes? separate them. then take yin, and take a couple bites out of the inside edge. YOu try to stick it with yang, it ain't gonna work, or be complete.

I like these last few posts I can see. Being alone is not just 'ok' it's healthy and it teaches us to take care of ourselves. As women, we're often taught to take care of others, but not ourselves. We all need to learn that it's ok to do that. And it makes us MUCh more stable and able to take care of others. And being alone allows us to break the cycle of going from one source of affection to the next, without ever balancing the Self. Being alone is VERY healthy and necessary in building a truly mature relationship. Kudos to all who have learned that.

I realised the other day that these last 18 months or so is the only time in my life that I've lived alone. I was with my folks up til 18, sharing a house with friends til 20, then the next 11 years with my ex.

In many ways I'm having the time of my life... :)

see? that's what i'm sayin, man. it becomes so easy ... growing up with your parents, then college and forced roomies, and there's always a significant other issue ...

i've been spending the past 3 weeks consoling this coworker friend who's all torn up about a girl he lived with for 1 year. he had to move out, and now hates living by himself - he's never done it before! he's 24! i don't understand! i was so eager to get OUT and live by my own rules and by myself and recharge in private.

and he outright admits he's scared to be alone, doesn't like it, has always had a girlfriend ... it's crazy. i'm like, if you learn in kindergarten to be social and interact ... then somewhere in there you've got to learn to be individual and alone and NOT interact. how to be unto yourself - it's as good as the other.

it's all about moderation and balance man. you'll end up so much happier, and so will anyone you live with after you've come to terms with that.

i am here to complain about mean @ss people on the boards being mean and rude to newbies. it's just not cool.

and when you try to talk some sense to them, although they're supposed to be an adult, they figuratively stick their fingers in their ears and blurt sarcasm all over the place as if they're still right and it's a-ok to be verbally abusive. on a board.

I disagree, I find it both entertaining and funny....but im different....

well, hey, that's cool. oh, i've got a question:

do you find it both entertaining and funny if it happens to you? someone being verbally abusive for their own egostroking, not just being a jokester. There's a difference between messing around WITH someone and messing around ON someone.

it's always enjoyable to laugh at other people's expense until you realize you could be one of those other people. and then, it's usually not so funny.

My own incredibally fussy nature is annoying me. Left Squall for Scrat only yesterday and already fancy a different avatar. I'll try and survive with Scrat for the week. And when I finally find an avatar that is me it will never change, never!

On a darker note... Lots an lots of people in Doncaster, Yorkshire are such scum, most of them on the street where I live. Arsonists, druggies, vandals, rascists, insulters, malicious children, malicious adults, stupid people (real dumb a***) with nothing better to do but make false police complaints against my family. My one street pretty much covers the whole spectrum of degenerates.

so while i let this jerk know i didn't approve, in restrained english, he responded with unnecessary vitriol. the irony being that he probably said it all thinking it's no big deal, i can vomit crap all over somebody and it's perfectly fine.

i'm not arguing it isn't his right. it is. but it's still not cool.

the end. :)
I've been giving this some thought since you posted it, and I respectfully disagree with your characterization of anyone here as being "mean" or "rude". I'd say there have been some slightly over the top responses to some newbs, but it's to new people who dive into posting with no regard for the tone of the place, for board ettiquette in general, for people who start off being rude themselves. Pointing out that the search function works and is a respectful part of posting here... pointing out that people communicate as clearly as possible here... pointing out that logic is expected and that anything presented as fact should be supportable with logic... these things are not "rude" or "mean". It is, in fact, a service to the rest of the board to hold the line of some standard of behaviour. Most of us come to mofo, as opposed to other places, because of the community here - and that includes the fact that the board is well-organized, and people communicate intelligently. There is no shortage of places where people can be disrespectful idiots, online.

Also, I thought you were joking about a message board being a place where "this kind of thing isn't supposed to happen". It would be nice if it didn't happen, agreed. But as message boards go, this one is waaaaaay at the polite and of the spectrum.

I would suggest, if people don't like the way that these things are being pointed out, that they point it out first, in the way they want it to be pointed out. Then there will be no need for the same people to make the same comments until they're blue in the face and they might not be so cranky.

I think she's directing her comments specifically about one member, but I could be wrong. I agree with your above comments, but suffice it to say, they aren't always characteristic of the veteran behavior you'll find on these boards. Thankfully, the majority of the Mofo crowd manages to keep things civil, fair-minded, and helpful whenever necessary - barring the occasional spat or two (which seem to have increased in frequency these past few months).

But occasionally, a member or two will attack a new member, possibly under the annoyed expectation that said new member is a no-nothing dolt with no knowledge or respect for forum etiquette. I'm guilty of doing so on at least one occasion, of which I regret. Mofo is frequently visited by users who sign up, post one or two poorly constructed messages with seemingly little or no regard for proper grammar - and yes, that gets frustrating. It clutters the boards. It disrupts our usual, routine browsing and challenges our desire to find and read thoughtful posts. But as per the Terms of Service we've all signed, that gives no member the right to disrespect any new member for any reason, no matter how deficient they might seem.

I would list examples of this type of behavior to illustrate the need for my post here, but I'd rather not - by quoting - indict someone of improper behavior without warrant, particularly in a thread that never asked for it.

Pointing out that the search function works and is a respectful part of posting here...

Of course, but the search function should be pointed out in a kind and helpful manner, I'd argue. That might seem obvious, but it seems easy for some to smugly suggest using the search function, as if the new user should have known it was there anyway. To suggest the search function in this way is to unfairly accuse a new member of being lazy without proof, rather than simply being uninformed.

pointing out that people communicate as clearly as possible here...

Agreed, but once again, I think a distinction should be made. Not everyone is as proficient at producing concise, poignant, and grammatically correct writing as others. In fact, many develop that talent simply by posting continually on message boards such as these. I say let's afford new members the chance to learn to write and respond here, rather than expect it of them upon their first appearance.

pointing out that logic is expected and that anything presented as fact should be supportable with logic...

Yes, but again, I re-state my comment about learning and developing skills. Not everyone can construct, or even know how to begin constructing, a solid argument. Should that deficiency deny them the privilege to discuss films, and to participate on these message forums? We should take care that we don't unnecessarily alienate new members, and instead encourage them to post and to learn as they go.

Most of us come to mofo, as opposed to other places, because of the community here - and that includes the fact that the board is well-organized, and people communicate intelligently.

Agreed, and it should be said that more than a few members here treat new members and old members with the same amount of respect, honesty, and fair-mindedness - which is certainly a testament to this forum's integrity.

Also, I thought you were joking about a message board being a place where "this kind of thing isn't supposed to happen". It would be nice if it didn't happen, agreed. But as message boards go, this one is waaaaaay at the polite and of the spectrum.

Agreed completely.

I haven't suggested my above thoughts because I believe the forum needs them. I'm confident that everyone who frequents the boards here already knows what I'm talking about. Yet, it seems necessary sometimes to remind oneself and others about the code of conduct and degree of understanding which shouldn't just be expected of us, but heralded as well.

I would suggest, if people don't like the way that these things are being pointed out, that they point it out first, in the way they want it to be pointed out. Then there will be no need for the same people to make the same comments until they're blue in the face and they might not be so cranky.

I agree that the burden of change lies with the new member, and not with the forum. It's up to new members to adapt, and to "learn the ropes," and to express concerns whenever applicable. But I also feel that the old members, being the frequent visitors that they are - the life-givers who keep these forums active - retain the responsibility to make welcome new members, and to educate them fairly and respectfully as they make the adjustment. That way, new members - who might be the next respected "old members" - are encouraged to stay, rather than having to blindly mesh with a group who's been together for years. I'm sure we would all agree that this can be a difficult and potentially lonely transition for anyone. Some are less deficient than others, obviously, and require little or no help to get into the swing of things. But for my part, I'd argue that everyone deserves a chance before they're challenged for being inadequate after only two or three posts...

I was out running earlier, and as I was nearing a lay-by I saw a car coming toward me. They didn't appear to be slowing down and nor did they give a signal or any indication that they weren't going to keep going (I was wearing a reflective coat by the way, I had to be visible), so I thought I'd better move over to give them room to get past and not hit me.

So I decided to move into the lay-by, and suddenly, without warning (or signal), so did they. And quickly. I almost dived into the hedge, grazing my knee and twisting my ankle in the process (and left feeling like a right wally), and they simply turned around and drove off

In hindsight, going into the lay-by was a silly mistake. I should've just stopped running and stood still to see what they were going to do, but they could've at least rolled down a window and asked if I was alright afterward.

I'm off to the pub. It is St. Patricks Day afterall, and I still have a few hours of Guinness left to enjoy :)

I am puzzled by your use of the word (underlined, no less) "attack". Perhaps I missed it. Could you please link me to an incidence where one or more posters have attacked a new person?

Also, could you show me in the TOS, which I have just copied and pasted below for your convenience, where it says that we must respect people? I see mention of "hateful" posts, but nothing demanding respectfulness. That is part of the tone of this forum, but it's also earned by people being respectful, and they get it in return. It's not mandated.

What I have seen posted regarding the search function has been exactly this: "If you had bothered to use the search function, you would have found threads already exist on this topic, here and here and here."

Please explain to me what is rude or mean in that wording. I am at a loss as to why a poster who says this would be classified as either of those things. I see irony. I don't see meanness or rudeness. Also, in the context of this incidence, it was said to a poster who has been posting here for months, and was at another board before this one. This was not a case of a person with 3 posts getting blasted.

I say that's a slippery slope, and here's why: you say later in this post that the burden of change is on the newcomer. But here, you are suggesting that veteran posters go the extra mile to decipher AOL slang and lazily written half formed opinions, until such time as the newer poster wises up. That doesn't add up to better posting, it adds up to a board flooded with 'tards, and topics like "Fun Fax About My Testacalz". The reason? Every day, several hundred people have a look at this board. They join up here if they see something they want to take part in. So if the board has a lot of low-brow tripe all over it, we get more low-brow tripe posters.

I think it's insulting to new people to insinuate that they're actually incapable of stringing together a cogent thought or two.

Agreed, and it should be said that more than a few members here treat new members and old members with the same amount of respect, honesty, and fair-mindedness - which is certainly a testament to this forum's integrity.
I'm not sure what this has to do with what we're talking about. Yes, most people here are all those things. That's what most of us value here.

Agreed, though I do fear you're about to burst into song... Herald at will, but I'm saying: don't villify people who are looking out for the standard of posting here. The alternative isn't pretty.

I agree that the burden of change lies with the new member, and not with the forum. It's up to new members to adapt, and to "learn the ropes," and to express concerns whenever applicable. You had me up to "blindly mesh". What do you mean by "blindly mesh"?

I disagree. People generally put their best foot forward in new settings. It's also human nature to check the lay of the land before launching into business as usual. People who arrive rude tend to stay that way, unless they're shown that that doesn't fly. Responding to what someone else puts out there is totally fair play.

Depends on how witty it is, if its clever and not just a cheap shot, I generally dont care, people's opinion of me doesnt change my opinion of me.

someone being verbally abusive for their own egostroking, not just being a jokester. There's a difference between messing around WITH someone and messing around ON someone.

I agree, theres a difference, but its not always interpreted correctly, what you call "egostroking" I might consider fun and what I consider funny may have been "egostroking"

it's always enjoyable to laugh at other people's expense

Yeah it is isnt it? :D

until you realize you could be one of those other people. and then, it's usually not so funny.

Usually, but sometimes is, I think when it comes to this board noone is intentionally trying to make ppl cry, some people are naturally rude the easiest thing is to take everything as a joke here...more later

I work for a very large utility company. This company has a lot of programs for low-income customers. Long story short, I'm in 6 to 10 homes of very low-income (poor people, most of whom are on some sort of welfare program) everyday, and I see how they live. As you may expect, most of them have a lot of kids, dirty, and many times, bug infested homes. Now, out of 10 of these houses per day, no less than 8 will have a very large, very expensive high-def tv with surround sound and the whole set up. Get ready for the sarcasm here: I think it's pretty cool how these people are so poor that they are on welfare, receive free programs from my utility company, get food stamps, and can still get themselves a 2900$ tv and God knows how many dvd's. Aint America great?
