Re: Shanghai Express, von Sternberg is all about exotic atmosphere, sets, costumes and some kind of sexual power stuggle between the stars. His films have very little plot or action, but they're often quite kinky. I think his best are The Blue Angel and The Last Command.

Just not that exciting to me. Maybe it is more stunning from an artistic point of view, but I've seen plenty more films that I believe excelled better in that category.

I agree with you. I'm not defending the guy. He made two or three good flicks, but most of his stuff I give
or
. It still has the stamp of an auteur and is pretty easy to identify as his even if somebody is not into his aesthetic.

Like the fella says, in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."

I haven't seen as much from this decade as I would have liked, but there were still a few that were tough to leave off, like Scarface and Bringing up Baby. I really want to watch some of the Japanese films from the 1930s that Tyler mentioned.
