Nicholas Cage syas he's Talking to Marvel Studios

While promoting Bangkok Dangerous, actor Nicholas Cage told a roundtable full of reporters that he and Marvel Studios have begun talks about a sequel to 2007’s Ghost Rider. If the story goes forward, Cage indicated Hell’s bounty hunter would next be found in Europe, working with the Catholic Church. The first Ghost Rider film was written and directed by Mark Steven Johnson and made on a $110 million budget. Worldwide, it grossed $228,738,393 while earning mostly poor reviews. It did, though, perform fairly well on home video, a determining factor these days.

But first, Cage will begin shooting Kick-Ass in Toronto in the next few weeks. "I play a guy named Damon and I'm the father of Mindy, who is Hit Girl and I'm Big Daddy and I'm training my daughter to become a super-hero."

Beyond that, the lifelong comic book fan confirmed he will do a voice role for next year’s Astro Boy CGI film. He also lent his support to the long-stalled Sub-Mariner film which has languished at Universal Studios for over a decade. The most recent Subby news is almost two years old with the studio thern announcing director Jonathan Mostow was signed to rewrite David Self's script and direct.

I have to be honest, I'm surprised that they would even consider a sequel.

Ghost Rider plain sucked, so I won't be seeing this.
Yes, it was not good at all. There wasn't one saving grace of this film. If Marvel is seriously considering a sequel, we can go out back, I'll take their money and kick them in the balls. That would be as good a sequel they could pull from that.

Ghost Rider 2 Gearing Up For Production

Variety is reporting that Columbia Pictures is gearing up to get Ghost Rider 2 in theaters, pushing for Batman Begins writer David S. Goyer to script the sequel to the 2007 Nicholas Cage-starring film. Speaking of Cage, he is expected (but not confirmed) to return for the sequel, having already proclaimed his desire to do so.

Though Goyer has yet to sign-on officially, word is that the next Ghost Rider will be based on a script that Goyer wrote years ago for the character. Details are sketchy on what that script involves, or whether or not Ghost Rider 2 will be an actual sequel to the 2007 film, or more akin to the quasi-reboot Cage described earlier this year.

Ghost Rider 2 will be produced by former Marvel head Avi Arad, Michael De Luca and Steven Paul, with Gary Foster serving as executive producer.

As Variety points out, it’s no real surprise to hear that Ghost Rider 2 is trying to “rev itself” into production; every third-party studio which currently owns a Marvel property is thinking along those same lines, now that Disney has partnered with Marvel. The studios know that if they don’t show any signs of forward progress on their owned properties, Disney/Marvel will have the right to reclaim them and develop them under their own banner, laughing all the while as the box office cash comes rolling in.

That dreaded fear has prompted the major studios to you-know-what rather than get off the pot, and currently in development alongside Ghost Rider 2 are:
  • FOX: Fantastic Four Reboot, Daredevil Reboot, Wolverine 2, X-Men 4, New Mutants, X-Men: First Class & X-Men Origins: Magneto
  • SONY: Spider-Man 4 (and 5)
  • UNIVERSAL: Namor The Sub-Mariner
  • PARAMOUNT: Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America

Again, Ghost Rider 2 is still in the early planning stages; no confirmation that Goyer will write it or that Cage will star in it. No word yet if Ghost Rider writer/director Mark Steven Johnson will be brought back, or if the studio will tap a new director to helm the sequel.

Ghost Rider 2 takes place 8 years on. Isn’t a Reboot

In September David Goyer was brought on-board to tone down his 9 year old R-rated Ghost Rider script and set it up as a sequel to 2007’s Ghost Rider cheesefest. He recently spoke to MTV and revealed some more details on Ghost Rider 2, saying it will be “what Casino Royale was to the Bond movies”.

“It’s not exactly a reboot,” said Goyer, who’s currently hard at work on his “FlashForward” television series. “I hate to say it’s more realistic, because he’s got a flaming skull for a head, but it’s a bit more stripped down and darker. It’s definitely changing tone. What ‘Casino Royale’ was to the Bond movies, hopefully this will be to ‘Ghost Rider.’ This story picks up eight years after the first film,” said Goyer. “You don’t have to have seen the first film. It doesn’t contradict anything that happened in the first film, but we’re pretending that our audience hasn’t seen the first film. It’s as if you took that same character where things ended in the first film and then picked it up eight years later—he’s just in a much darker, existential place.”
Nicolas Cage will be back as the man with the flaming skull, and filming will take place next year.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance could start filming this year

Collider recently got the chance to talk to Ghost Rider producer Mike De Luca and he gave a bunch on updates on the sequel, including that it may be called Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, and if things work out it could begin filming sometime this year.

Here’s a summary of the main points of interest from the interview:
– Mark Steven Johnson is not directing the sequel

– Eva Mendes will not return as Roxanne Simpson

– Ghost Rider 2 (or Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance) will be a hard PG-13

– The film is going to take place in Europe

– De Luca is open to David Goyer directing the sequel but it all comes down to his very busy schedule

– Says the sequel will be like “pushing the reset button” on the franchise

– As you might expect from the success of Avatar, Ghost Rider 2 might be done in 3D

– Says Goyer has just delivered his updated outline to the studio

– And says Ghost Rider 2 could easily be in front of the cameras this year
Last year David Goyer said that the film would take place 8 years after the first film, and that “what Casino Royale was to the Bond movies, hopefully this will be to Ghost Rider”.

Ghost Rider 2 may move ahead without Nicolas Cage

Vulture are reporting that if Nicolas Cage isn’t free to film Ghost Rider 2 at some point this year then Columbia Pictures may have to continue on with the movie without him. The reason? Rights. Apparently Columbia has to begin production on another Ghost Rider movie by November 14th 2010, otherwise the rights will revert back to Marvel. While fans may be happy about the prospect of the character going home, Columbia isn’t.

From Vulture:

Insiders tell us that Columbia is asking Marvel for an extension. But time is running out. Cage has spoken about his desire to make a second Ghost Rider; the issue is whether his schedule will be free before the deadline. Disney is also hoping to get him for a third National Treasure with Jerry Bruckheimer, which could be shooting as early as this fall and would presumably earn the star a hefty paycheck.

But Columbia desperately needs a blockbuster for 2011, now that Spider-Man has been pushed to 2012 — not to mention that no exec wants to lose a moneymaking franchise to a rival studio.

Would the film work without Cage? One unconnected producer who’s worked in the comic-book genre gave Vulture an emphatic no, pointing out that the Ghost Rider character isn’t particularly well-known; any familiarity with it comes from associating the face of Cage — a worldwide box-office draw — with the title. Compare that to Iron Man 2, for which billboards all over the nation show nary a glimpse of star Robert Downey Jr. You don’t need the star to sell that movie, you just need the suit.
David Goyer’s script is set 8 years after the first film and is apparently much darker and realistic, although if Nicolas Cage can’t return and they have to hire another actor they might as well just call it a reboot.

I hope this isn't made, the first was horrid. I pray they lose the rights.

I'm probably the only one who feels that way, but I much preferred the earlier cowboy version of Ghost Rider, better costume, concept, and I loved the glowing disembodied cowboy head.

Johnny Blaze will be rolling back into theaters in the much leaner and hopefully meaner Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

According to TheWrap, Sony and Hyde Park Entertainment greenlit the Marvel sequel at a vastly lower cost than what was spent on the 2007 original.

The site claims Ghost Rider 2 was initially budgeted at $135 million but has now had its budget slashed down to $75 million, roughly $35 million less than the first film cost to make. (Star Nicolas Cage was also forced to take a hefty pay cut.)

The Crank team of Neveldine & Taylor are directing Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, whose cast also includes Ciaran Hinds, Idris Elba, Placido Violante and Johnny Whitworth.

The film will reportedly hit theaters in both 2D and 3D February 17, 2012, almost five years to the date that the first Ghost Rider rode into cinemas (February 16, 2007).
