It's a very tough question.Although I have more memorable performances in my mind by De Niro,I still think that Al Pacino gives more of himself on the screen.Pacino in Scarface and Dog Day Afternoon was brilliant.Better than any De Niro performance for me.

that's what she said...
De Niro is better in my opinion. It seems like Pacino a one genre type guy and can only have one personality but De Niro is more flexable. He does Comedy, Horror, Family and Drama movies and does a ROCKIN' job in his acting preformance in all those different roles.
He can be funny (like in Meet the Parents), he can be a scary psychopath (like in Hide and Seek), I loved his animated character Don in Shark Tale and he did a good job in that drama movie.... ughhh whats it's name.... the one with Milla Jovovich and Edward Norton where Edward plays a guy in prision and Milla is the gf who seduces De Niro's character, maybe he's the warden? Anyways, he does a great job in that too!

Good whiskey make jackrabbit slap de bear.
Yeah, but not very well.

Seriously, it's De Niro. His performances in Raging Bull, Cape Fear, The Godfather Part II, GoodFellas, The King Of Comedy and Casino outdo everything Pacino did, although I liked Al in Scarface quite a bit.

Well said about De Niro.
I did like Pacino in Scarface as well (but just like Full Metal Jacket, there was a part of the movie that could have been done a lot better ) , and in Panic In Needle Park, Heat, Carlito's Way ( where Sean Penn was outstanding in a supporting role ) but in Dog Day's Afternoon John Cazale stole the show and surprisingly Pacino sucked in 88 Minutes.

This is the movie you are talking about:

We've gone on holiday by mistake
Probably De Niro although since Heat in 1995 he had made non stop crap, though he was great in "Meet the Parents".

I don't remember asking you a ******* thing!
I'm gonna have to go with Pacino because I prefer his characters a lot more than De Niro's most of the time. De Niro is an acting legend, don't get me wrong, but lately it seems like he's stopped trying to make anything serious in favor of comedies. Doesn't make him a worse actor for it, but it's something to consider. At least Shouty-Al keeps trying to stay in serious roles, even if they're not as popular as you'd like them to be. I don't know, that's just my take on the situation.

They are both very good actors, though De Niro comes first in my book..

de niro by far. great films like taxi.

I wouldn't quite say by far.

There appears to be some generational lineage, at least in my mind:
Brando, De Nero, De Caprio.
Nicholson could also represent as well as Hopkins and the younger guys would be Lewis, Depp, Branagah, Crow and Bale.

Robert DeNiro has a more impressive body of work and I tend to enjoy his films more. Both are great, naturally. I haven't much of their recent stuff. For me Pacino is absolute tops in Serpico and Scarecrow, while DeNiro in Taxi Driver and Raging Bull is impossible to beat.
