A whole topic on Horror films here, and probably more in the search:

http://www.movieforums.com/community...ghlight=horror

What type do you like, more on the psychological side or horror that is violent/gory?

Some that are good:

The Orphanage

A Tale of Two Sisters

Ils/Them

If you don't mind gore/violence:

If I kept track of every horror movie I have seen I could fill this entire page with countless classics from Hammer Horror, to 80's Slashers to 90's Teen Screams, to the current stuff like Cabin in the Woods.

Its hard to say, but it depends on how many horror movies you have already seen. If your like me, and no mater where you go, every top 10, 50 or 500 list, and you have seen them all. Then I can try and pick a few randoms, that are generally not on those kind of lists.

These are best lists that I can pull out of my hat, on the spot to give you a good start:

Asian Horror is easily the scariest, here is a start:

I love the 80's and I am a big Slasher movie fan, to many to name:
http://slashers.50webs.com/index.html

I also love Hammer Horror, there is a good list on the left side of this page:

I think the most thrilling ones that I love are the ghost stories. There are hundreds of these, and I still find new ones.
But Ghost Stories lists are always the same. I can't find any that don't just use the same old, like Shining, Poltergeist, or any of the Asians movies.

That Asian list was kind of weak, here is the best list I have ever seen.

If these are not specific I can point out some from them. Generally I like every single one from all the lists. But some people don't go for the real campy or gore stuff.

im sure youve viewed them already but the saw movies always give me my gore\horror fix.... OR a friday the 13th marathon

thanks for the suggestions! horror movies lately can't seem to match. i feel like i've seen them all ...i tend to always watch ones like Wrong Turn, The Hills Have Eyes, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Saw, The Descent but i like a variety

Thta would depend on what kind of scarry you like; real life, ghosts, sci-fi, devil.Just go to the Favorite Horror Thread on this forum and you'll see a variety to choose from.

^ If that The Hills Have Eyes is the original Craven one, I really recommend the superior remake, a lot better.

Agree. There's so many sub genres to the Scary Movie, I personally find it's impossible to say which and what are a favourite.

Possession/exorcism, Ghost, Devil/Demon, Torture Porn, Slasher... plus a few more.

Personally I find the ghost story and the possession/exorcism films to be the most impacting. As long as it's made well.
Films like Poltergeist, Exorcist, Exorcism Of Emily Rose... ie; The well made real feeling ones.

Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Devil, and most other relatively new ghost stories are just shock factor and have no real coherant reality to them. They're also badly written.

Slasher films like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Hills Have Eyes and Elm Street are all well and good and the similar tone of torture porn like Hostel and Saw is disturbing enough, but not exactly something that frightens me deep down.
Though saying that, there is one (and only one) slasher/torture film that shocked me, Wolf Creek. The rest of that genre though are just an entertaining night in with a DVD for me really...

... but the properly written ghosties and possessions films would be the ones that give me a proper thrill.

Maybe it's because I believe in Ghosts??

Quick roundup on my choices for Candyforniacats09's collection: Poltergeist, The Exorcist, The Exorcism Of Emily Rose, Wolf Creek.
That's about it really.

Try some French horrors like:

Sheitan (2006)
Calvaire (2004)
Frontiere(s) (2008)
Ils (2006)

"the old dark house" from early 30's really nails the atmosphere, even if it ultimately makes little sense in the end
