Fall back Movies

Tools

I have just been listening to a review of the film "Rounders" which happens to be a personal favourite film of mine. One thing that was said by one of the reviewers was that it was not a great film but it was a film they enjoyed and put it into a category of a fall back film. They explained it was not a film that would win thousands of awards but to them that didn't matter, it was a film that they knew inside and out and new every line but that when they could find nothing else that interested them that much it was the film they could put on and enjoy every single minute of.

Now I think this is a very interesting and very good idea, I am very similar in some of the films I watch and I have a list of films I do a very similar thing with including:

Intermission,
In the Loop,
Two for the Money,
Head of State,
Anti Trust,

Just to name a few, they are all films I will watch til the day I die in a kind of guilty pleasures way. Do you have something similar?

To me a fall back film is something I'll put on when I can't have my full attention on it. These are usually films that I can just watch any few minutes of, and enjoy immensely.

A wide range of films fit this category for me from all time classics like Goodfellas and Taxi Driver, to personal favorites like The Hangover and The Devil's Rejects, to guilty pleasures like Beerfest and Pig Hunt.

These are all movie that I can check in at any point, and say, hey, I love this part.

Several evil pleasures I can watch almost any time would be --

Ghostbusters I and II (favorite New York movies)
Blade Runner
Coppola's Dracula
Metropolis
Nosteratu (the old silent version)
The Fog (early John Carpenter version)
Any of The Thing movies and the one that was never made - At the Mountains of Madness
The Wizard of Oz

It could go on for a while from there.

I would agree that a fall back film would have to be a movie that you have seen so many times that you pretty much have it memorized. Personally, there are a whole bunch of movies that I have seen 50 or more times, but I still can watch anytime the opportunity presents itself. Not only can I be entertained by it again, I will probably notice something in the film I have never seen before, no matter how many times I've seen it. Some of the films that fall in that category for me:

PULP FICTION
THE WIZARD OF OZ
TOOTSIE
CABARET
WEST SIDE STORY
DOG DAY AFTERNOON
SCARFACE (1983)
TRAFFIC
ALL THAT JAZZ
THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO
HANNAH AND HER SISTERS
MARY POPPINS
THE SOUND OF MUSIC
NEW JACK CITY
TAXI DRIVER
THE KING OF COMEDY
ALL ABOUT EVE
THE ODD COUPLE
THE EXORCIST

I'm not old, you're just 12.
The Blues Brothers
Rent
Ghost Busters
Gremlins 1 and 2
Back to the Future
Hot Tub Time Machine
Blazing Saddles
The Jerk
Police Academy
Tropic Thunder
The Big Lebowski

There's probably more but those are the ones off the top of my head.
