I might try this later but it's pretty much impossible. All i'll say is that a few that would make my top 10 are Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, The Beatles, Nas and The Rolling Stones.
Yeah, it's definitely tough. I wanted to make a list months ago, but I knew it would take me a while. Not as hard as ranking films though.

I've been hesitant replying to this since trying to list 25 bands seemed pretty daunting. There's hundreds of bands that I love. Ah well, I'll do it anyway.

These aren't really in order, but the ones highest are the ones that came to mind the quickest:

1. Hatebreed
2. Breaking Benjamin
3. Enter Shikari
4. Between the Buried and Me
5. The Black Dahlia Murder
6. A Day to Remember
7. Thirty Seconds to Mars
8. I See Stars
9. Underoath
10. The Devil Wears Prada
11. Brand New
12. Carnifex
13. Scary Kids Scaring Kids
14. The 1975
15. Silverstein
16. System of a Down
17. Poison the Well
18. Gideon
19. Cstvt (formerly Castevet)
20. American Football
21. The Ghost Inside
22. Mineral
23. Being as an Ocean
24. Slipknot
25. From Autumn to Ashes

And many, many more.

I haven't heard of any of the bands on this list.

Lol not even Breaking Benjamin, Thirty Seconds To Mars, or Slipknot? Those bands are considered pretty popular. I understand why you don't know a lot of them though, they're mostly metal/hardcore bands. If you don't listen to that kind of music then you won't know them really, since it doesn't really get played on any radio stations.

Nope, but I listen to mostly country music and showtunes, so I'm not surprised when I've never heard of a bunch of artists listed in these lists. I'm just surprised that I haven't heard of any of them on your list. Most lists have at least a few artists that I've heard of, like The Beatles, The Eagles, Journey, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, etc.

Yeah I gotcha, and nothing wrong with those bands either, they're awesome as well. I grew up in the late 90s/early 2000s and most of the bands on my list are from that era.

Country however, I can't really get into. There are a few songs that I don't mind but overall, not my thing.

Yeah, that sounds pretty much like what everybody else here says. Apparently I'm the only country music lover here on MoFo.

Pretty surprised that you haven't heard of Slipknot at least. I know you wouldn't like them but i'm sure you have heard something by them before.

I probably haven't heard them unless they were nominated in a song tournament here. I don't listen to any radio stations that would play that type of music. We don't have a good country music radio station here, so I listen to my mp3 player instead of the radio. The only radio station that I listen to is the sports station while the NY Mets are playing.

The thing isolated becomes incomprehensible
I also excluded classical... I love Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, Chopin, Schubert - any classical music that's dark, melancholic -- any suggestions?
You have a whole period with dark and melancholic composers! Check Romantic composers, especially from Germany/Austria and Russia.

Besides those, you have Hugo Wolf (a darker version of Schubert), Shostakovich (one of my personal heroes), Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Mahler, Strauss, Glinka, Mussorgsky, Cesar Cui...

(This is one of the 3 last songs by Hugo Wolf. Some months later he went insane... It's so amazing to sing this.)

He also had a more excited/psychotic phase:

3. Enter Shikari
9. Underoath
10. The Devil Wears Prada
17. Poison the Well
+rep for those!

My favorite Underoath albums are Act of Depression and Cries of the Past, how about you?

Those aren't nearly obscure enough. I've heard of all of those.

I would say a tie between They're Only Chasing Safety and Define the Great Line. I first heard of them when "Reinventing Your Exit" came on a commercial during Headbangers Ball. I also have The Changing of Times on cd.

All their stuff is good though, AoD and CotP are cool to listen to since they were SO much heavier then.

You got a good list as well! I know of a few of them but there's quite a bit I haven't heard of.

The ones I know are:
Alexisonfire
Underoath
Orchid
Thrice
Zao
Pig Destroyer
Death
iwrestledabearonce

All of them are good!

Yeah, that sounds pretty much like what everybody else here says. Apparently I'm the only country music lover here on MoFo.
The funny thing is if you list a few Country singers that you like I would probably recognize all or most of their names. Where I live everyone loves Country music and you hear it everywhere.

A system of cells interlinked
This changes constantly for me, but some artists would include:

Pink Floyd
Queensryche
Lights
Devin Townsend
Katatonia
The Beatles
Amorphis
The Cure
Insomnium
Iron Maiden
Otis Reading
The Cure
Megadeth
Radiohead
