In short, The Desolation of Smaug's length and additions will understandably annoy anyone expecting Jackson to adapt the novel more "accurately", but my "criticisms" are mostly just shameless nit-picking, because on the whole I really did enjoy The Desolation of Smaug.

Overall, Desolation Of Smaug is an improvement from Film 1 and adds geniune exciting moments to keep the audience engaged, intrigued and wanting more for Film 3.

The fights scenes with Legolas were the highlights of the film for me, especially the scenes in Lake Town.

Smaug himself is incredibly well conceived, his scenes being by far the best in the film for me.
