It just seemed like the fish wasn't that into it is, of course, referring mainly to the romantic/sexual dynamic between Elisa and the creature, but the spirit of the phrase kind of sums up how I felt about the film, which was that in almost every regard it was a bit underwhelming.

But I wish the creature idea had been left at the Marvel/DC doorstep, and a more serious film about outsider people struggling in the early 1960s and feeling isolated because of their differences....that would have made a much more stronger film, than what we get.

A film that initially seems to be a loving homage to science fiction films of the 50's turns out to be anything but as we watch a creature cast a spell over characters in the film that should be terrified of him.

But the sole popularity of the film will depend upon it's emotional appeal to those captured by the poignant story of a poor mute girl who finds love and fulfillment with a humanoid amphibian; the Cinderella meets The Creature from the Black Lagoon aspect.
