the final 50 minutes of the film take place after Watanabe has passed away, and other characters are left to interpret and dissect his behaviors after the fact
My only impression of this movie is that it's a drama, and I said my favorite part of Seven Samurai was the character interactions, so going all in in that department should be a no-brainer, right?

The scene where Watanabe (Takashi Shimura) goes to the doctor and another patient literally tells him that he's doomed was maybe one of the most powerful scenes I've seen on film.

Set in then contemporary times, Kurosawa proved to me he did not have to make a period piece to make a fantastic film.
