I think that this film is an interesting case in what happens when a film adapts a book that tried to avoid certain film-ish tropes and ends up stranded between loyalty to the source material and wanting to go fully cinematic with the premise.

By the time the movie starts we are moments away from taking off and its pretty refreshing to see a movie not taking time of introduce the characters.

Mark Whatney, played by Matt Damon, not only survives the initial disaster, but inspires.

Film's bad qualities didnt even leave enough room to fill in the blanks like an old b movie cuz they "kind of did ok with the sets"

The film introduces us to a space mission on Mars that is disrupted by some sort of meteor storm during which one of the crew, Mark Watney (Matt Damon) gets struck by a large piece of debris and is assumed dead.

The Martian is one of the funniest movies I have seen all year, largely due to Drew Goddards adapted screenplay and Damons perfect execution of the sarcastic spaceman Mark Watney.

Based on the novel of the same name by Andy Weir, the film follows the story of Mark Watney, a botanist who is left stranded on Mars after being presumed dead as a result of a Martian storm, and his attempt to survive long enough to make contact with NASA and return home.

We see NASA and its top tier people all clambering for an explanation and trying to keep the media happy and form a rescue plan at the same time, Matt Damon on Mars doing his survival thing, the crew of the ship doing their own thing to figure out how they can help its pieced together nicely, apart ...
