All of this is what makes Altman films so enjoyable to watch - and he's at his peak working on The Long Goodbye.

The different versions of the music score, Marlowe lighting a cigarette in every scene he's in, Marlowe's dry mumbling throughout the film ("It's okay with me"), the naked girls who live next door, all the great supporting characters and background characters (Arnold Schwarzenegger is in this film!)...

Miller was Altman's anti-western, The Long Goodbye is Altman's anti-noir.

Right after seeing this movie, he quickly became one of my favorite film characters of all time.

I've called Altman dry many times before, but this was far from boring. Despite having long in the title, this is an entertaining film...

Elliot Gould does a fair turn as Philip Marlowe, bringing a freshness to the character that once in awhile is reminiscent of Bogart's famous portrayal, without ever resorting to impersonation.
