It is the growth of Tony Stark throughout later films and the charm of RDJ's performance that makes Tony Stark, in my opinion, the best of the Marvel Cinematic characters and a great character to kick off the franchise with.

The fact that Iron Man is nowhere near as dark, serious or 'adult' as The Dark Knight (which was released in the same summer) means that people might not appreciate or expect just how 'good' a film Iron Man actually is.

There is nothing outstanding on offer, it was somewhat of a gamble to cast Robert Downey Jnr, but he doesn't let the side down, and indeed provides one of the more wry comedic performances of recent years.
