We had 2 major battles at the end of this film instead of 3 but the choreography, mixed with the way the movie gets you to care, or hate, the characters involved makes the movie stand strong next to the other movies that came before it.

Namely it's inability to be it's own idea, sure it's got new characters and a new setting but when you take a step back and look at it, it's essentially just A New Hope filled to the brim with references to the other Star Wars films.

Throughout the entire movie I felt like the older characters represented the generation of people who had seen the movies tons of times, while the new protagonists were the new viewers, with The Force Awakens being their first movie.

If he hadnt done anything else, keeping the whole story arc of Lost together indicates that Abrams respects the need to have story telling and human characters as the core of a series, even if it is a techie, epic monster such as Star Wars.
