Yeah, Sweeney Todd won't end up among my all-time favorite films, or not even my favorite musicals (I think?), but it was sure damn fun to watch.

Burton employs his accustomed darkness to the already twisted material, making the story even creepierthe film allows Burton to expand portions of the story that were only touched upon on stage, particularly the back story of Benjamin, Lucy, and the Judge which makes the return of the clearly dement...

I enjoyed the comic aspects, especially Todd sitting sullenly at the beach in Mrs Lovett's fantasy song, and wished there could have been a few more to lift the gloomy melodrama.

Meanwhile , an early companion of Sweeney falls in love with his daughter (not knowing she's Todd's daughter) - but her "father - (man who ruined Sweeney Todd's life)" keeps her locked away.

The art direction is really wonderful. The palatte of drab stark contrasts and occasional flashes of red, red blood are beautiful and create an otherworldly ambiance.
