A Night at the Roxbury

A Night at the Roxbury

This is one of those situations where I should have listened to Yahoo! movie recommendations, as they said that I wouldn't like this film (they tend to be about 50-50 with their predictions). I felt like it was an SNL sketch that could have been cut down from its already short running time of eighty-one minutes.

Chris Katan and Will Ferrell do solid job in their lead roles, but at points the unbearable stupidity of their characters and what was said almost made the film unbearable. And for some reason, Molly Shannon just rubs me the wrong way in every film that she is in. I understand that this is an SNL film, but the acting was pretty miserable.

And the story wasn't all that hot either. Like I already said, at points in time the dialog was almost unbearable to listen to, and I really wanted to turn it off or mute it (but I try never to stop in the middle of a movie without having plans to continue it again later). And the jokes that were written in generally didn't work all that well. They definitely hit with a few of the jokes, but there were a lot of misses, and how far they spread out the jokes in the film made it difficult to watch. It was meant to be a comedy where the punches kept on coming, but even with as short as it was, the timing of the comedy simply felt off during the whole thing.

Overall this film didn't have much going for it. Even the celebrity appearance in the film has been trumped many times over by better celebrity appearances. If you want to see a long drawn out SNL sketch (from back in the days when SNL was actually pretty solid), then this movie is for you, but the idea should have simply been a sketch, not a film.
