DISNEY CLASSIC no.54

REWATCH
With ‘Big Hero 6’, Disney brings forward their duplicate effort
to the adopted sister studio, Pixar, and their major superhero success, The Incredibles’.

The two films are fairly different, but not drastically so, because they both deal with some of the same subjects, like family and individual differences, despite doing so in their own distinctive ways. The main reason why I think the comparison is credible, is because they both seem to aim for adventure, action and entertainment more so than previous films from the studios…

‘Big Hero 6’ doesn’t brake much new ground, yet the action-heavy and color-amplified cinema experience awards the audience with something fresh even so. I found the visuals and effects to create quite the ride, but even for all the action, the heart of the story was still very well drawn and felt rewarded and substantial. That has a lot to do with Baymax, where Disney once again succeeds in creating a character that is simple on paper but complex in personality, not unlike that of EVE, from ‘WALL·E’. The inflatable Baymax fills the room with a breeze of fresh air and expands upon the thematic beats of the story, which then collimates in the climax of the movie, where all the story elements merge together, like the microbots from the film. ‘Big Hero 6’ hails individualism, perhaps almost too openly, but thankfully the mystery plot keeps things a little more exciting throughout so the film doesn’t lose its breath completely.

I don’t know, to me this movie is just so easily accessible and with a character like Baymax to keep things afloat and my attention away from blatant story beats and generic character actions, I find this movie to be just fine – not too sappy and not too overblown. Because it is very much a Marvel flick in Disney clothing, so you kind of know what to expect already. It is more or less exactly how I would imagine a Marvel film would be, if Disney had their hands on it, so it was hard to be disappointed – especially since my expectations were rather low before watching it.
