Blue Velvet (Rewatch)

I didn't like Blue Velvet all that much the first time I saw it, but I couldn't stop thinking about it, and when I can't stop thinking about a movie, that's usually a sign that I need to see it again. So today I finally got around to watching it again and I must say I liked it a lot better the second time. The experience wasn't as uncomfortable since I had seen it before and since I wasn't watching it with my mom this time. I knew what was going to happen, so certain scenes weren't as startling and I knew what to expect. I was prepared for Dennis Hopper's manic character this time and came to see that it worked for the movie. There is probably no one exactly like Frank (Dennis Hopper) in the world, or at least I hope not, but that's ok because he's supposed to be an exaggerated form of craziness and evil.I also don't think that Frank is just a person, I think he represents the evil of the world. This is especially realized in the scene where he says " In dreams I walk with you." I think this means that even in your dreams, you can't escape the evil of the world. I saw more symbolism this time when watching it and appreciated the mood that David Lynch set more. I saw more things then I did the first time I saw it. For some reason, I don't see the ending as being real. The rest of the movie is so dark, and then suddenly there is this perfectly happy ending that wraps everything up in a nice little bow. I feel like maybe it's a hallucination or a hopeful vision of one of the characters in the story, but part of me just doesn't see it as being real, because there's something just slightly off and I can't quite put my finger on it. But that's one of the reasons I think I liked this movie more the second time. Lynch gives you this feeling of "there's something off about this." and it's really interesting and makes you think. I am going to give Blue Velvet a higher rating than before because I really liked it a lot better the second time.
