A heavy romantic theme runs through the film, and one could say this is a love story with some martial arts and intrigue thrown in, as the romance really is the main theme of the film.
I'll pipe in and say Zhang Yimou House of Flying Daggers is probably the best action film I've seen, because it interweaves a terrific story in as well, effortlessly.
