After escaping with Newt and Hicks from the alien planet, Ripley crash lands on Fiorina 161, a prison planet and host to a correctional facility. Unfortunately, although Newt and Hicks do not survive the crash, a more unwelcome visitor does. The prison does not allow weapons of any kind, and with aid being a long time away, the prisoners must simply survive in any way they can.

Since she is cloned in Alien: Resurrection, I feel that's not really her, so, yes, Alien 3 ends with the death of Ripley and if not for Ripley in this film, Alien 3 would be completely unwatchable.

After the events of Aliens Ripley and the other survivors crash on a remote planet occupied only by the few employees and the inmates of a small prison.

Script changes at the last minute, sets being destroyed because of said script changes, studio interference, the director (David Fincher) publicly disowning the film.
