The film introduces Tonya as a pre-schooler being shoved onto the ice by her abusive mother (Janney) and follows her through her romance and marriage to the equally abusive Jeff Gillooly (Sebastiani Stan), through the attack on Kerrigan, referred to here as "the incident", and beyond.
