It's the same formula they used in the Harry Potter movies I've watched, and it comes off as a bit unfocused.

There are mentions of characters from Harry Potter's world that will sound familiar to most fans and one character that appeared in older form in a Potter film also appears here, played by a different, younger actor.

The Obscurus (the form that magic takes on when witches and wizards suppress their magical abilities) feels like a complication too far; with Fantastic Beasts, all that was really needed was Newt tracking down his escaped beasts.
