Was Marlon Brando good in Guys and Dolls?

Guys and Dolls (1955) I just watched this last night and I'm not sure if Marlon Brando was good in this or not? The movie itself is an innovative, escapist comedy musical that's perfect for those who don't like musicals, it's really something different. It's a lock for my Musical Countdown ballot. I think we have under 3 weeks tell the deadline?

In reading about Guys and Dolls at IMDB trivia section I learned that co-star Frank Sinatra really wanted to play the lead, Sky Masterson which went to Brando. Instead Sinatra was cast as Nathan Detroit which pissed off old blue eyes. Sinatra thought Marlon Brando was all wrong for the part and wanted it for himself. Was Brando good? Would Gene Kelly, who also wanted the lead, have been better?

It’s A Classic Rope-A-Dope
I liked Brando in it, but that’s not super surprising because I really like him always. Plus I enjoy his banter with Jean Simmons more than any of the song and dance stuff. I don’t think Brando could sing, so if you are someone who wants all the characters in musicals to have great voices you probably don’t like him in it.

My two cents

When I first watched Guys and Dolls I thought Marlon Brando was good in it, but last night I couldn't help but feel he was 'walking through his role'. He did that blunt, bold gambler part good but I didn't buy him as being romantic nor did I believe Jean Simmons would've fell for him. Personally I think Gene Kelly would've been better in that role. Still one heck of a fun musical. Hope it makes the countdown.

Was Marlon Brando good in Guys and Dolls?
Was Brando good, and was Brando miscast, are two different questions.

Yes, he was good because he's a great actor, but he was also miscast. He has charisma that works for him as a gambler, but he's not really right for the romantic part of the movie. I just find it hard to believe that Sister Sarah would fall in love with him.

And while his singing voice wasn't terrible, it wasn't good either.

However, having said that, I don't think Sinatra would have been the best choice for Sky Masterson either. I thought Sinatra was perfectly cast as Nathan Detroit. I would have loved to see Gene Kelly in the role of Sky Masterson.
