I was hoping I could expand the movie list I watch about guys that are broken and beaten by life, for example:
One Hour Photo: Robin Williams as a sad and delusional man
Synecdoche New York: Over time, Phillip Seymour Hoffman's character, Caden, despite having great dreams of creating a theater piece, slowly dives into a series of a hugely failed project, losing his daughter to his wife who goes on to be successful, never-ending medical problems, realizing who his true love is only to have her die the next day, and getting old quickly which the movie shows in clever date/time clues placed throughout. Inevitably Caden realizes his life's work amounts to nothing.
The Assassination of Richard Nixon: 1974 movie based on a true about Sam Byck, played by Sean Penn (who was unbelievably good), loses his wife and children, fails to achieve his dream as a small business man, loses his job, and starts to feel that Richard Nixon is responsible for all of his problems. He attempts to hijack a plane to use as a weapon and crash into the White House however his plan fails miserably and is barely a blip in the news.
Carrie: This movie starts out really corny but if you get past that, the 1952 movie where Sir Laurence Olivier, successful manager for an upscale Chicago restaurant, trapped in a horrible marriage meets a girl who he feels is his second change at life and risks everything, even his future to ever work again, as he becomes bonded when he somewhat accidentally steals the nightly drop. He runs away with the girl but his life slides downward fast and the woman, played by Jennifer Jones, leaves him thinking that he would much better without having to support her. She goes on to become a successful actress as he lives in homeless shelters, begging for change. They meet one more time as he's begging for change and she realizes that he became this was because of her and wants to help him but when she leaves to get him something to eat, the end scene shows him figuring out that killing himself is the only solution for and leaves.
Being John Malkovich: Classic movie about unrequited love which I'm sure everyone has seen.
Adaptation: Also a Charlie Kaufman movie about a socially awkward man and his brother both played by Nicolas Cage. Kaufman, unable to "meet people very well" as puts it, tries to write a screenplay without resorting to creating a typical formulaic artificially plot driven Hollywood screenplay, which he eventually does, almost like a checklist of everything he didn't want to do. Although this movie has a somewhat happy ending, the whole movie has a lonely awkwardness feel.
A Quiet Man: Christian Slater plays a passive, paranoid, loner; beaten down by his boss and ridiculed by co-workers, eventually decides to retaliate after non-ending humiliation.
I'm totally positive there are more but off the top of my head these are few that I could come up with. Any help would be awesome.
Thanks in advance.
