Dramas like Adaptation about lonely, broken men

Tools

I was hoping I could expand the movie list I watch about guys that are broken and beaten by life, for example:

One Hour Photo: Robin Williams as a sad and delusional man

Synecdoche New York: Over time, Phillip Seymour Hoffman's character, Caden, despite having great dreams of creating a theater piece, slowly dives into a series of a hugely failed project, losing his daughter to his wife who goes on to be successful, never-ending medical problems, realizing who his true love is only to have her die the next day, and getting old quickly which the movie shows in clever date/time clues placed throughout. Inevitably Caden realizes his life's work amounts to nothing.

The Assassination of Richard Nixon: 1974 movie based on a true about Sam Byck, played by Sean Penn (who was unbelievably good), loses his wife and children, fails to achieve his dream as a small business man, loses his job, and starts to feel that Richard Nixon is responsible for all of his problems. He attempts to hijack a plane to use as a weapon and crash into the White House however his plan fails miserably and is barely a blip in the news.

Carrie: This movie starts out really corny but if you get past that, the 1952 movie where Sir Laurence Olivier, successful manager for an upscale Chicago restaurant, trapped in a horrible marriage meets a girl who he feels is his second change at life and risks everything, even his future to ever work again, as he becomes bonded when he somewhat accidentally steals the nightly drop. He runs away with the girl but his life slides downward fast and the woman, played by Jennifer Jones, leaves him thinking that he would much better without having to support her. She goes on to become a successful actress as he lives in homeless shelters, begging for change. They meet one more time as he's begging for change and she realizes that he became this was because of her and wants to help him but when she leaves to get him something to eat, the end scene shows him figuring out that killing himself is the only solution for and leaves.

Being John Malkovich: Classic movie about unrequited love which I'm sure everyone has seen.

Adaptation: Also a Charlie Kaufman movie about a socially awkward man and his brother both played by Nicolas Cage. Kaufman, unable to "meet people very well" as puts it, tries to write a screenplay without resorting to creating a typical formulaic artificially plot driven Hollywood screenplay, which he eventually does, almost like a checklist of everything he didn't want to do. Although this movie has a somewhat happy ending, the whole movie has a lonely awkwardness feel.

A Quiet Man: Christian Slater plays a passive, paranoid, loner; beaten down by his boss and ridiculed by co-workers, eventually decides to retaliate after non-ending humiliation.

I'm totally positive there are more but off the top of my head these are few that I could come up with. Any help would be awesome.

Thanks in advance.

I JUST watched that. Excellent movie. Loved the opening sequence.
Love the gradual meltdown ..... I always think, there but for the grace of God every time I watch it

LOL. Yes, I was very excited watching it again after maybe at least a decade gap. The more I watched though, the more I had a sinking feel that I can relate to some of the poor guy's frustrations WAY more than I probably should! Good thing I don't live near a pier, I guess, cuz that's obviously the psychological springboard into madness.

A few other movies that might not exactly be what you're looking for but do use very broken emotions to move the story forward:
What Dreams May Come
Blue Valentine
Insomnia
Requiem for a Dream
Children of Men
Whiplash (?)
Oldboy (maybe)
All is Lost (?)

Nice to see some love for this movie...Sean Penn is brilliant

The Pawnbroker (1964)
The verdict (1982)
Bad Lieutenant (1992)
Romeo is bleeding (1993)
Leaving Las Vegas (1995)
Distant (2002)
Crimson gold (2003)
Edmond (2005)
You Were Never Really Here (2017)

What I now class as my favourite film, as I find it so easy to watch often: The Pornographer (1999).

Oh my god I totally forgot forgot that, The Fisher KIng (1991), Leaving Las Vegas (1995), and Edmond (2005) are among those movies I failed to list that I really love when I want to feel like crap.

I also forgot to list Little Noises (1991) in which there are multiple losers, with Crispin Glover being the delusional of the two. Also:

Love Liza (2002)
Magnolia (1999)
Boulevard (2014)

Midnight Cowboy (1969)All About Lily Chou Chou (2001)

...are some other movies I forgot to list.

I really really like Manchester By The Sea (2016) and Blue Valentine (2010) and they just reminding me of another movie I have to dig out with Ryan Gosling called Half Nelson (2006) which if I remember, his character also ends up to be a huge loser, but I'll have to watch that again.

Insomnia (2002) also just reminded me of an Al Pacino movie called The Panic in Needle Park (1971). I should give both another watch.

I guess I shouldn't omit the loser girl movies:

Dogville (2003)
Smashed (2012)
Air Doll (2009)

...although Air Doll is more of a drama/fantasy, it still has an aching sorta sadness to it.

I totally like Falling Down (1993), he's mostly vengeful/angry rather than sad but I've always really liked this movie. I like the part where he goes into that army surplus store and store owner thinks he has a bond with him keeps telling him, "your the same you and I" until Michael Douglass tells him "No, I'm an American, your a sick a$$hole".

The Wrestler (2008) and American Beauty (1999) I haven't seen in a million years so I don't remember them much but I wanna give those another watch now. Children of Men (2006) I usually watch in my list of Sci-Fi but I do remember it also has a feeling of hopelessness which I forgot about. I loved Whiplash (2014) but he turns it around which I also really liked.

The violent picks I also love, Oldboy (2003), Taxi Driver (1976), Bad Lieutenant (1992), You Were Never Really Here (2017) as well. The original Oldboy he is happy in the end but also twisted in that he is having an incestuous relationship he is unaware of. Taxi Driver, all time great movie. What lack of sleep + looking for a sense of purpose makes some people do. Also Bad Lieutenant (1992) is another all time favorite. Oh yeah, Requiem for a Dream (2000) is another great heavy classic.

So the movies I haven't (or I don't think I've seen) and can now look for:

What Dreams May Come (1988)
The Beaver (2011)
The Pawnbroker (1964)
The Verdict (1982)
Reign Over Me (2007)
Distant (2002)
Crimson Gold (2003)
Naked (UNSURE OF YEAR)
Paris, Texas (1984)
Romeo Is Bleeding (1993)
Warrior (2011)
The Pornographer (1999)

Huge thanks.

Crap, I just remembered another loser girl movie, Christine (2016).

That elusive hide-and-seek cow is at it again
I'd throw The Beaver right at the top of that list. Great, odd movie IMO. What Dreams May Come is a personal favorite, but it is very stylized and even playful at times. Still though, there are a few gut punches in there that really get me down.

As to movies that make me feel like crap (love the way you put that), There are a few movies that I cannot watch else they put me in a 3-day depression. Children of Men, Blue Valentine, Moulin Rouge!, The Road, and probably Requiem for a Dream.

Based on the truth.. and lies.
Edmond is such a weird movie for me. The sense of hopelessness and being disoriented by life is very effective.

I like Edmond, he keeps trying rationalize every bad decision he makes with a sense indignant entitlement kinda, but really though, it reminds me that some bad life choices can take you from a seemingly comfortable life to having all your life's possessions in a shopping cart, or worse, forced to suck some D in a cell block. William H. Macy is always good playing a guy slightly unhinged, like a train-wreck you can't stop watching or something, I dunno. Edmond shoulda just hung out with Julia Stiles and quit while he was ahead.
