Comparing the chariot races in Ben Hur (1959) and Ben Hur (2016).

In the Ben Hur remake the chariot race scene looks slower to me at least, compared to the original.

I think the reason why is, because in the original, they use telephoto lenses to pan with the race, which makes the horses look like they are running faster, where as in the remake, the use much wider lenses and ride along with the horses, which makes them look slower in speed.

Would I be right on that? But if this is the case, why would the remake choose a less faster looking option for the race, out of curiosity?

To my taste the 2016 re-make looked too fakey, and used too much CGI, although longer and more vigorous. The Charlton Heston '59 version was very exciting, and mostly done live.

Actually the 1925 Ramon Navarro and Francis X. Bushman is probably my favorite.
