Fahrenheit, it would be very high. Celsius, it would be insanely high.

I doubt there's a detailed explanation in the film of why it was so high. It's more fantasy than hard science fiction. All the audience needs to know is that there's some Science Stuff going on that involves mercury and high temperatures. We're not supposed to ask more than that any more than we're supposed to calculate how Dumbo can use his ears to fly.

It has the degree sign, so it's not Kelvin temperature scale.

And since it's an American movie, I'm guessing it's degrees Fahrenheit.
