This is a film I didn't see in its entirety when I was about 14, which was 10 years ago.
It has never quite left my head, and in the past 6 years, since moving to London, I've asked film people and nobody ever knows.
So. It's a fairly old film. It's in black and white. It's not in English, and I'm pretty certain it's not in German, French, Spanish, Italian or Portugese. I feel it may be in Czech.. but I certainly can't be sure of that.
I think it's World War I. There are two soldiers (friends, I believe) who have been captured. They are being held in a little rat-filled basement, which reminds me enormously of Paths of Glory.
They are given an ultimatum, either switch sides or be hanged. In the end, one chooses death, the other switches sides. The one who switches sides then has to kick the stool out from under his friend, and then gets brought along with the other soldiers, laughing.
If someone could help, that would be marvellous.
