Here's my list, in no particular order:

Dirty Harry (the first one)

Munich

Sound of Music

Goodfellas

The Departed

Zodiac

La Numba ( I didn't enjoy this one at all, especially since I saw it pretty much right after 9/11.)

Missing

State of Siege

Z

Bader-Meinhoff Complex

The Front

The Other Side of The Mountain

Does anyone else have any list(s) of movies that're based on true stories? A curious, inquiring mind wants to know.

Dirty Harry was inspired by a true story, it wasn't based on it.

There are a zllion movies based on true stories. How true the actual movie is varies.

Good point, will.15. Thanks. The wording of the title of my thread was probably a little bit off. I stand corrected.
I also might add that all movies, including ones inspired by true-to-life stories/events are exaggerated by Hollywood, to both greater and lesser extents.

Good choices from akatemple. Texas Chainsaw was based on Ed Gein and his fetish for flesh, the character Buffalo Bill in Silence Of The Lambs was based on Ed Gein too.

For me, there's only one...

Young Guns.
The most accurate portrayal of the Lincoln War outside of a documentary, and has even been toned down in places to make it seem more real and more acceptable for the audience, though in truth the apparent OTT ending, was actually much, much bigger in real life.

Wow! I knew that The Titantic was inspired by a true story, but I didn't know that any of the other ones on your list had been. Thanks for the heads up, akatemple.

Oh, btw, I forgot to add "Jaws" and Lawrence of Arabia to my list.

"Jaws" was a novel, which, in turn, was inspired by the book "Close to Shore", a true story about a Great White Shark that really did terrorize a coastal New Jersey resort town until it was finally caught. It took place back in the earlier part of the 20th century.

True story pretty much means 10% real 90% Hollywood additions to make it sell.

Psycho was also inspired by Ed Gein.

Dracula

Citizen Kane

The Untouchables

I would say that all the movies are based on real events more or less. ^^

Interesting points, Gabrielle and will.15.

Although I didn't see Psycho myself, I had no idea that this particular film was inspired by Ed Gein.

As for all of the movies being more or less based on true events, that's an interesting possibility that I never took into consideration. Thanks for the heads up, both of you.

... the character Buffalo Bill in Silence Of The Lambs was based on Ed Gein too.
Actually Buffalo Bill is a combination of Gein, Ted Bundy and Gary Heidnick. Gein's skinning of his victims to make furnishings and body suit/dress, Bundy's abduction methods and Heidnick's keeping his victims in his basement.
