Trying to ID a Movie from a Scene - Maybe 2010 The Year we Make Contact or sumthin

Tools

Hello

I saw a movie years ago and I think it may have been scifi.

All I know is that I remember possibly an opening scene
of a futuristic highway and someone riding an advanced
(possibly futuristic) motorcycle down that highway very fast.

The motor cyclist is then automatically detected speeding
by the (possibly intelligent) Highway Patrol computer system
which is monitoring
traffic flow/speed on the highway. The highway computer
performs a BOOKING procedure against the errant motorcyclist
and so it speaks to him over his bike communication system
"You have been detected speeding doing (something like)
150mph in a 100mph zone. You will be fined $1000.00 and this
amount will be automatically debitted from your bank account
Dr "such and such"".

The motorcyclist curses (and then moves off again as he
stopped after being booked by the Highway Patrol computer)
and then moves off again down the highway.

All I remember is that scene. I don't know what movie it is
a part of (maybe someone here can help or make suggestions?).

I originally thought the scene in question may be part of the
movie 2010 The Year we Make Contact (which is I think
a sequel to Stanley Kubriks 2001) and I thought the
motorcyclist in question may have been Kirk Douglas
(but then he may have been too old for that role even
back then). As far as I know the guy riding the motorcycle
should be the character of Dr Floyd in 2010
(if I have the right movie).

I have just bought a copy of 2010 and I can't see this scene
anywhere in it (maybe they deleted this scene but why ?).
I'm not sure 2010 is the right movie. It could be in another
scifi/techno/futuristic style movie.

Not talking about any of the Tron movies either.
(not what I'm looking for).

I wish I could remember which movie the above scene
was in.

Any help very much appreciated.

The scene you have described is definately not in the movie 2010. I have the movie in my collection and have watched it many times. Yes, 2010 is a sequel to 2001.

It just occurred to me that when I saw that movie scene detailed
above it may have been just a movie short/trailer (upcoming attraction)
for something I saw at the cinema. I may not have actually seen
the whole movie.

I have had some other ideas as to possible movies which could
contain that scene (given that the movie in question is probably
scifi, futuristic or something simlar style wise) :

The Robocop series
Total Recall
Men in Black series
Independance Day
Millennium Man
The Matrix series
Mission to Mars
James Bond series (recent movies only)
Mission Impossible series
Superman series
Transformer series

I also thought that possibly 2001 itself may be another
candidate (but I have this movie also and I don't think
this is it either) ?

I wonder if it could also maybe in one of the XMEN movies ?

That's about all I can think of for now
(maybe there could be some extra food for thought here
for someone).

Thanks to Saturn above for that contribution.

chou for now

Some other ideas that popped into my head regards this are :

1. The movie I am looking for could be in one of the Marvel style
super hero movies (or other super hero style movie).

If anyone has any other ideas as to where I could possibly
find the movie/scene I am looking for then I am all eyes
and ears.

2. I am also wondering if it could be possible that the scene
in question was actually deleted from it's movie
(so maybe it appears in the original cinema release of
the movie BUT for various reasons (running time too long maybe ? etc)
was deleted before the first VHS tapes or DVDs were released ?).

So maybe it did appear in the original cinema release of 2010
( The Year we Make Contact - see above ) and then was later
deleted ? (why I'm not sure)

Is this possible ( could it happen ) ?

Seems a long shot to search google/web etc
for relevant deleted scenes when you aren't that sure
what you are looking for and how to nail it down.
(Have tried. No joy right now. Too much google and other
info to go through).

Any ideas regarding the above also welcome.

If it is in the trailer, it is in the movie.

Bright light. Bright light. Uh oh.
I have no idea what the movie is. It seems far too special-effect oriented to be all that old. I highly doubt they would cut it out of the movie, but if it was a coming attraction, it might have been specially made for that and never in the movie. How long ago did you see what you remember?

Also, many shots are in trailers which never make it to the final film. I'm constantly watching old trailers on DVD to see what things I never saw when the movie played at the theatre or on the DVD. As I said above though, I doubt that's the case with what you're describing. Most of the shots I notice deleted from trailers are only a second or two.

Not exactly sure when I saw that thing. I do have a gut feeling though
that the memory I have may date from around the 80s
(yes it's that old).

2010 was done in the 80s and that was why I somehow associated
my memory with 2010. It seemed to fit but it seems I may be wrong.

I want to get hold of an old VHS tape of 2010 because I am still
suspicious about 2010 (deleted scenes, who knows ?).

Thanks for your input on this.

You have of course hit the nail on the head
(and that's what makes it so hard to ID this movie).

I'm not sure why I associate this memory with 2010.
I think it may be because the memory I have probably
dates to around the same time frame as 2010
and that's the only movie I can remember seeing back then
which fits the genre/style of what I am trying to work out.

Yes who knows how many hundreds of scifi etc movies
they have made (sigh - too hard basket).

There seems to be another explanation in my mind for this associated memory and that is:. There is a scene in 2010 where Dr Floyd
goes home to his beachside home where his oceanographer
(marine biologist ?) wife and son are also living
(he has to tell them he is leaving on a flight to Jupiter
in around 4 months and the wife doesn't take this well
- she is scared ).

When Floyd, his wife and son are sitting at the dining table eating
there are also dolphins swimming/playing nearby in their
ocean linked indoors moon pool. This scene with the dolphins
in 2010 has always stuck in my head and for some reason the
memories of both these scenes are somehow paired
in my mind/memory (it could be that I was seeing 2010
at the time in the cinema and before the main feature
there may have been an upcoming feature trailer
which had the scene in question in it.
This may in fact be what happened).
If so then no wonder these things are associated in my mind.

Also in the opening scene of 2010 when Dr Floyd is talking to the
russian government agent/officer or operative
about the original discovery mission (2001) and what
went wrong 8/9 years ago (also offers him a seat on the flight
of the russian spaceship Alexi leonov to Jupiter/IO to find answers
which will get to Jupiter around 1 year sooner than the upcoming US discovery 2 mission).

For some reason I must have my memories muddled as I have always
assumed that Dr Floyd rode his high tech bike on the futuristic
highway etc to get home from the radio telescope installation
to his family near the beach (sounds a little nuts I know).

BUT if I saw 2010 and this scene from an upcoming attraction
on the same day at the cinema in 80s then it all could make sense.
i.e. Yes you are totally right and it has nothing to do with 2010
but everything to do with a possible trailer I saw at the cinema on the
same day.

Again, what that other movie is,,,,,,,,,,,, sigh
oh well maybe I'll find it another day.

Thanks anyway.

The bike scene sounds like the pilot episode for Seaquest DSV starring Roy Schneider.

Did you know that in the 1980s movie PREDATOR the titular character was not originally portrayed by Kevin Peter Hall. It was in fact Jean-Claude Van Damme donning a much more insect inspired full body suit before he left the production which then led to the recasting and redesigning of the famous hunter.

Thanks to genyav and cryptic for your help
(and to everyone else here).

Looking into your suggestions.

To Cryptic

I owe you a case of beer or whatever you like to drink.

You hit the nail right on the head. You struck gold on a 26/27
year movie mystery with your suggestion that the movie might have
been the original seaquest dsv pilot trailer !

You were right my friend.

One more google search was all it took.

I found this post over at another of the movie forums :

Quote from scootre there

Wow... it's been almost 20 yrs since that show first aired??

Funny... I was only thinking of SSV the other night and remembered the first episode when Roy Scheider gets done for speeding on his bike and gets a message through his headset to say the amount of fine has just been deducted from his bank account.

I was thinking of that scene because I was wondering when the Govt might just start doing that to people.

End of Quote

So that's it, Done (deal) and dusted, problem solvered !

I know exactly what happened with my memory now.
2010 was screened in 1984. On the same day in the
cinema I saw the seaquest dsv pilot trailer before
the main feature being 2010.

Hence my memory association between 2010
and the seaquest dsv trailer
i.e. The dolphin scene in 2010 (ocean theme)
and the high tech motorbike scene in seaquest dsv which
also stars roy scheider (he is also the bike rider
in scene described above).
Roy played Dr Floyd in 2010.

This answers all my questions and I think all of those above as well.

Now to get a copy of seaquest dsv (pilot or first season).
Too bad I missed seaquest dsv back in the 80s.
I was busy with other things.

Memory is an amazing thing
(learning more about what makes it tick every day).

A BIG thank you to all above who have contributed to this
coup/windfall !

Now onto that song I want to ID from a 2000 or whereabouts
memory !??? The answer is out there !
