Best filmmaker working today?

Here, have another one:

NOT.EVEN.CLOSE

Nolan, not anywhere close to even being in the same ball park as people like Scorsese, Eastwood, Wong, Lynch, Soderbergh, Coen Bros., Almodovar... and on and on and on... Dozens of directors with much better work out there, for sure.
Incredibly puny body of work? Right, so Memento, Following, Batman Begins AND The Prestige (a film you yourself said was well constructed) are puny bodies of work then? They're all **** basically, yeah? Sorry mate but that is completely and utterly bollocks.

Memento is arguably a five star deal. Not a thriller with a gimmick, but a taut, norish and deeply moving psychological drama that's more than meets the eye. If one can't appreciate the technical and thematic brilliance of the film then...i don't know.

Following as a movie is probably just a very good film. However, it was his debut so it merits a four stars. Yes, it may not be Citizen Kane in terms of being the best debut ever, but I still found the film to be a masterclass in great low budget filmmaking.

I'm not even gonna go into the rest because i've made my points numerous of times.

I'll say this though...Following, MEMENTO, Batman Begins, The Prestige...THIS.IS.CHRISTOPHER.NOLAN

As for PT Anderson. Very talented, sure. However, he seems content with being the guy who keeps playing homage to Martin Scorsese. His ensemble pieces are not really daring. Moving, yes. But not daring.

I like directors like Christopher Nolan and Shane Meadows...two of the best directors in the entire world right now. And yes, I do think that they will be up there with the likes of Hitchcock and Scorsese in a few years. Specially since these blokes are really young. One's more of a showman, the other is more rooted in grittyness. Both amazing auteurs.

Sadly, my favorite directors are all dead:
Alfred Hitchcock
Akira Kurosawa
Billy Wilder

Favoritre director working today? I don't know if I have just one. Christopher Nolan does good work, and based on just two films (Finding Neverland and Monster's Ball), I'd say Marc Forster shows great promise (I should get around to seeing Stranger Than Fiction, I suppose, but I'm not a huge Will Ferrell fan).

Steven Soderbergh is probably my second favorite working director, Ocean's 12 notwithstanding. (Hey, even Hitchcock had some off films).

But if I had to choose just one, I think it would be Guillermo del Toro.

Hey, Prestige, have you seen Nolan's Insomnia? If you have what did you think of it?
Alright mate.

I thought Insomnia was a decent thriller. The story was interesting and you had a bit of a dream cast there with Al Pacino, Robin Williams and Haliry Swank.

HOWEVER, given the ability of the director, Insomnia feels like a movie that didn't reach it's full potential. I felt that the theme about sleepbeing an important factor in how you go about your day could have been explored in much more depth. Had Nolan scripted it, i'm sure it would have been a four star affair.

The performances are also great with Williams casted against type. That said, the film still feels a bit formulaic and lacks originality what with it being a remake of some Norweigen film of the same name.

It's GOOD..but not great and easily Nolan's weakest film to date. A Solid three stars.

Right now I would have to say Cronenberg. He hasn't made a film (aside from the drag racing one) that I haven't watched and thoroughly enjoyed. Looking forward to Eastern Promises in a big way!

I can dig that. Haven't seen Fast Company but want to see merely through curiosity.

Not exactly an indie director, but James Cameron's movies had a real impact on me as a child. T2, being my favorite. I am still kinda' disappointed he didn't do Spider-man, now that would have been a chocolate in peanutbutter situation.
