Okay, so I have a huge pile of movies that just keeps on getting bigger and bigger, and I need a hand deciding which I should watch first. Out of the listed, what would you say are the top twenty priorities? I'm going to film school in September, and would like to see as many of these films as possible beforehand, but I need some help figuring out where to start. So here's the list:

I can't give you a top 20. Since I haven't seen 20 movies on that list.

The movies I have seen and highly recommend:
LA Confidential
Don't Look Now
Dogville

Besides that I would say watch the Ingmar Bergman films listed and Breathless if it's Jean-Luc Godards À bout de souffle.

I've had this same problem for years and asked for same advice! I've done a degree in Film Studies so i'll highlight the one's ive seen and think will put you in good standing for that and also add thoughts on others

127 Hours - overrated
Angel Heart - nice 'kind of' horror
Benny's Video - alright but not as good as Haneke's others
Black Christmas - original slasher, good for history of genre
Blow Up - stylised and important British film capturing contemporary culture
Breathless - seminal French New Wave, you WILL study this!
Cache - fantastic ambiguous thinking film, bit of post-colonialism themes
Cemetery Man - heard good things but yet to see
The Seventh Continent - difficult to watch, intentionally so despite Haneke's first feature, i'd watch last
Don't Look Now - classic but not the most 'auteur' version of Reog
The Exterminating Angel - yet to watch but for Bunuel should start at 'Un Chien Andalou'
El Topo - cult midnight movie, 'Holy Mountain' is a better Jodorowsky but this is considered more cult
Europa - own but not seen, all von Trier is worth watching though think this was before he was such a provocateur
Amarcord - own but not seen, Fellini is good for a film student but love '8 1/2'
Happiness - twisted film
Ils (Them) - underwhelming
Persona - definitely watch, great great film
Down by Law - Jarmusch is another person to put in your catalogue but 'Dead Man' is his more accessible
Dogtooth - interesting Fritzl type flick, quite shocking but other films have done similar
LA Confidential - solid Hollywood neo-noir
Let the Right one in - possibly best horror film last 10 years, watch
Man Bites Dog - fantastic premise and delivery, dark and funny
Nil by Mouth - powerful stuff
Santa Sangre - less edgy Jorodorowsky but still Jodorowsky so worth watching
Shallow Grave - great Brit film
Shadow of the Vampire - interesting premise, would watch if you've seen original 'Nosferatu'
Wild Strawberries - not my favourite Bergmann but some nice touches
Days of Heaven
The Beyond - it's Fulci, some very exploitative gore and violence but dated and not great unless you know what it is and take it as such. Goriest but worst of his trilogy
The Frighteners - nice little film, pushed aside by Jackson's other films for a reason but still fun
The Serpent and the Rainbow - i liked it and it's enjoyable but not greatest film
The Piano Teacher - fantastic character study
The City of Lost Children - great encapsulation of Jeunet's style
The Devil's Backbone - brilliant Spanish horror, definitely worth checking
Trick r Treat - fun portmanteau but nothing special
Dogville - excellent challenge of film form and Brechtian style
Dead Ringers - amazing performance from Irons, not as icky as Cronenberg can be but some of his best direction
The White Ribbon - long and not as interesting as Haneke's previous offerings
Tesis - interesting little thriller, 'Open Your Eyes' is a better follow up

Got some great films in there, i'd watch all Cronenberg, Haneke and von Trier you can get your hands on. There's a wide range there and i'd aim to watch the popular films of most the Euro-Auteurs you have before getting to some more cult films, at least from perspective of attending Film School. Persona and Breathless should be top priority. Cult film is easy to get lost in and Jodorowsky is definitely the best place to start

There are more than 20 here, but it's overloaded with Bergman, so just don't watch so many of his if necessary. The Bergman I'd start with is Wild Strawberries.

Cemetery Man
Don't Look Now
The Exterminating Angel
Amarcord
Forbidden Games
Persona
Fanny and Alexander
LA Confidential

Let the Right One In
Man Bites Dog
Onibaba
Repulsion
Shadow of the Vampire
Wild Strawberries
Days of Heaven
The Magician
The Virgin Spring
The Devil's Backbone
Dead Ringers

Holy cow!

Try Happiness! Todd Solondz is a crazy man.

Sychophantastic

Awesome, guys thanks a lot. This is a good starting point, going to make a list and watch them in that order.

Dead Ringers is on the go for tonight. I'm pretty excited to catch it, Cronenberg is one of my favorite directors.

Don't be a sissy... watch them all.
