It was announced today by producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Inc. and Sony Pictures Entertainment, that Daniel Craig has been cast in the role of the legendary British secret agent, James Bond, in the highly anticipated 007 adventure thriller Casino Royale.

Casino Royale reunites Wilson and Broccoli with Martin Campbell, who directed the 1995 Bond blockbuster GoldenEye. His most recent film, The Legend of Zorro, will be released on October 28, 2005.

Casino Royale will be the 21st James Bond film produced by the franchise holders, EON Productions. The MGM/Columbia Pictures production begins shooting in January and is due for release worldwide on November 17, 2006. It will be filmed in the Czech Republic, the Bahamas, Italy and the UK.

Neal Purvis and Robert Wade wrote the screenplay based on famed author Ian Fleming's first novel. The script is currently being polished by Academy AwardŽ-nominated writer, Paul Haggis (Million Dollar Baby).

Born in 1968, Daniel Craig was raised on the Wirral nr. Liverpool. He moved to London to join the National Youth Theatre at the age 17 and continued his training at the London Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Craig has since become regarded as one of Britain's finest actors securing a variety of roles in television, theatre and film.

He is currently filming a thriller alongside Nicole Kidman, The Visiting, and has two films in post-production; Steven Spielberg's Munich and Douglas McGrath's Every Word Is True, co-starring Sandra Bullock and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Recent film credits include Sam Mendes' The Road to Perdition, The Mother, Sylvia, and last year he received much critical acclaim for Matthew Vaughn's Layer Cake as well as Roger Michell's Enduring Love.

Wilson and Broccoli said "It has been a long time ambition for us to film the first book in the series, 'Casino Royale', which defined the complex character of James Bond. We are thrilled Daniel Craig will play the character of 007. Daniel is a superb actor who has all the qualities needed to bring a contemporary edge to the role. 'Casino Royale' will have all the action, suspense and espionage that our audiences have come to expect from us but nevertheless takes the franchise in a new and exciting direction."

"James Bond is a character without peer in motion picture history," said Pascal. "He is a household name recognized in virtually every corner of the globe and because of this renown, the casting of the new 007 takes on a special importance. We believe that in Daniel Craig we have found the ideal 21st century Bond and we couldn't be more privileged to be working with Barbara and Michael, who are tireless champions and guardians of the James Bond legacy."

Director Martin Campbell said, "The thing about James Bond is that each actor who has filled the role has brought his own style and imprint. With Daniel as our new Bond, I am thrilled to be returning to shepherd the new 007 in the new Bond adventure."

Dan Taylor, President of Metro Goldwyn Mayer Inc, said: "All of us here at MGM are delighted that Daniel Craig, an actor of such high-calibre, has been chosen to be the next Bond. We are also very excited to be working closely with Barbara and Michael again and with Columbia Pictures on 'Casino Royale', which we predict to be the biggest, best Bond ever."
Opinions? I think he'll be a pretty good Bond...not quite as good as Connery or Brosnan, but he may surprise everyone...discuss.

well, us and the Welsh folks. heh.

I still would have liked Clive Owen as Bond, but judging from Layer Cake, Daniel Craig is a good choice. (He is kind of like a British Steve McQueen, really.)

Too many Scots on this forum! D'OH!!!!
The master-race is taking over Mofo.
Craig will be a good Bond, I've always been impressed with him as an actor, and by the sound of it Bond is going to have an overhaul and be a bit more edgy, gritty and realistic.
Looking forward to it.

As bad as Timothy Dalton was, I prefer the gritty, realistic Bond to the suave, pretty boy Bond of Brosnan. My guess is that after the glitzy spectacle that was Die Another Day, they'll take the franchise in a more believable direction. Kinda like going from Batman & Robin to Batman Begins. When you can't possibly get any more over the top, you get back to basics with a minimalist approach.

I'm looking forward to it.

He probably looks ok handling a gun and from what I've read he's respected. But, as Bond....ehhhh...he's doing nothing for my toes.

Only time will tell though. I'll be looking forward to seeing the type of personality he plays Bond with.

Hugh Jackman would have been so much better though.

I'm shocked!!!

I seriously thought it was going to be Paul Reubens (aka Peewee Herman)...

Needless to say, I'm deeply disappointed. I was so looking forward to seeing Peewee do the ol' "Bond, James Bond" line with his outrageous accent... He would surely have given Connery's Bond a run for his money!

But seriously... do you really think Daniel Craig stands a chance at succeeding at Bond after the somewhat recent release of Johnny English, starring whatsisname... I forget... the guy from Mr. Bean... Rowan Atkinson, I think, is his name...

Does Daniel Craig stand a chance at Bond after Rowan Atkinson's Johnny English? I think not!

Daniel, you'd better just quit while you're ahead, ol' boy!

i will miss pierce brosnan...and i am not sure about casino royale...i am so used to the first one...i hope i will be able to take this whole thing seriously...

congrats to daniel craig...i hope he does as well as sean did...

I knew that. My surprise was acted.

I think it's interesting how americans somtimes are americans, plain and simple, and sometimes tend to be another nationality. All americans, except for the natives, originally descend from other countries than USA, and it's interesting to see how these roots in some situations can become more significant than in other situations. Like when the new Bond is appointed...

Just a little observation on how America more than 500 years after Columbus still is a nation of immigrants.

Your right...I'm shocked at myself...please forgive me Piddy. I...I'm so ashamed of thinking of Bond as a certain type of eye-candy. Bad Annie.

Of course, I could continue to be naughty and say something about the Bond girls relating to sexism, but I'll be good.

Actually the whole subject is interesting. I think that's why I love movies (like The Joy Luck Club and Bend it Like Beckam) that deal with familes trying to mesh together two cultures. My grandparents are/were Slovak and it was important to keep their ways and culture alive in their kids, and my parents just wanted to be American (or in the case of "Bend it", British) and learn/try new things that sometimes lead to conflicts. I think that's a general theme that alot of families can relate to, if not now, than at some point in their family tree. I guess I'm babbling on, so I'll stop.

He he.. Well, if you could've seen me while I wrote that post you would have noticed that my eyes were ..eh.. glowing from irony.

No, please don't stop! PLEASE!!

But that's exactly what I'm talking about. People who come to a new country preserve their culture because otherwise they risk feeling totally lost in the new culture. What I think is interesting with americans though is that even if their forefathers came to America over hundred years ago they still, in some situations, refer to themselves as scottish, italian, irish and so forth. And when you try to think of the reasons for that, then it becomes really interesting.
