I think the sanctimony may be the part about not being concerned about and even refusing to mitigate the spread for the safety of others.
What are your thoughts on mitigating spread, avoiding future mutations and herd immunity?
There's still an open floor on this question, and any of the libertarian "do what thou wilt" types need to address before patting themselves on the back for being so courteous to others.
It was quite funny when the Fauci emails were released. ("What was that?" you ask? Oh, nothing, the story fizzled in about four days because it was pure fume.) Some tried to claim that Fauci had lied about the efficacy of masks, when he actually just reinforced the
proper efficacy of masks. As was formally explained at the time, but went way over the heads of people like Rand Paul and Scott Atlas, is that masks are somewhat helpful at protecting their wearer - about 50-60% more protection than not wearing a mask - so better than nothing. Where masks are
most effective is in preventing the wearer's droplets from entering into the air in the first place, so you're supposed to wear a mask to
protect others due to the invisible nature of asymptomatic spread - those with no or mild symptoms or those in the contagious window (7-10 days) before symptoms appear. The altruistic aspect of mask-wearing is lost on a lot of these folks because, although they seem courteous in respecting the rights of others, they're actually more of a selfish objectivist and therefore the concept of a small sacfrice of convenience and comfort for the overall good of stopping the spread of a deadly pandemic is something that they find unfathomable.
Anyone who thinks the "anxiety" around wearing a mask is appropriately comparable to the anxiety of losing a loved one to covid or having to suffer the vascular and neurological effects of long-covid has pretty much automatically recused themselves from being respectful members of society.
