1940's Recommendations

I know it isn't a sure thing the next Countdown is going to be this, noone has said they'll host it yet and it will be ages away if it is anyway but even if it's not this thread will be useful anyway. I'm getting back to watching 40's films right now and i usually use the lists here for stuff like Western's i'm not that familiar with but i noticed there's only three 40's Western's i've not seen from that list yet so some good 40's Western recs would be appreciated. This is for any 40's films though that's just a request from me.

I'll keep all the recs and any links people post in this post like i did with the Sci-Fi one. Will add a few of my own shortly but i'm not very knowledgable of the decade yet.

Yeah, western recs are a good thing.

Also some horror recs for this decade would be appreciated.
Watch Pursued. I blind nominated it for the 40's HOF and liked it alot. It's from Raoul Walsh who is a really good director and stars Robert Mitchum. Only me, Daniel and Raul really liked it mostly due to the story i think but i could see you maybe liking it.

Don't know any 40's horrors i don't think.

Perhaps, you could list films from 40s you've already seen. Then it would be easier to recommend. First thing that comes to my mind is to check some of the films with Charles Laughton in it.

It's not just for me, it's for everyone here since we are most likely doing a 1940's Countdown next. People like to watch as many films from whatever the next Countdown is about before sending their lists. So it doesn't really matter what i've seen, i'll add everything that's suggested to the first post and i'm sure there will be some stuff for me there.

Here's a post i made in the 40's HOF thread when i wasn't sure if i was going to join. I nominated something i hadn't seen, ended up going with Pursued. Still haven't seen any of these so far all i know they are awful but i saw them mentioned as great under appreciated films by critics i really like and i'm planning on checking them out myself.

When i was thinking about joining this i was going to ask Sean if it was ok if i nominated something i hadn't seen like some have done in a few other HOFs. Simply because i've only really watched the big classics from the decade and i would've rather give something not well known a possible chance at the Countdown whenever we do it.

I read through alot of stuff about lesser known great 40s films: i'm only namedropping this because it sounds like something i'd like from what i've read and i'm planning on watching it soon:

Le Corbeau (Henri-Georges Clouzot, 1943)

From the same director as The Wages of Fear. I've heard it described as the first French Noir although i'm not sure how accurate that is. Anyway it sounds great and i can't wait to watch it, hope some others do.

A few others i was considering after reading about them:

Strawberry Blonde (Raoul Walsh, 1941)

The Mortal Storm (Frank Borzage, 1940)

This is of particular interest to me since it is from the same year as The Shop Around The Corner which i watched yesterday and loved, and it also stars Stewart, Sullavan and Morgan.

Yellow Sky (William Wellman, 1948)

Who knows maybe i'll hate them all but i'm planning on watching alot of lesser known films for this countdown because i think i spend time on the already acclaimed classics for these decade lists too much and my list looks basically the same as the Countdown.

Let the night air cool you off
Not counting The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, because it probably doesn't really qualify as a western, I think I've only seen four westerns that I can recommend.

The Ox-Bow Incident (1943) - proto-noir western/pre-12 Angry Men-ish
My Darling Clementine (1946) - One of the best shot final shoot-outs, but I need to watch it again
I Shot Jesse James (1949) - It's a Sam Fuller film so expect a different atmosphere than all the others when you pop it in.
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) - The prettiest western from this decade I've seen.

The Paradine Case is a decent court drama I would recommend as well as Tales of Manhattan, that's a comedy. I just love to watch Charles Laughton

I had a mixed reaction to She Wore A Yellow RIbbon when i watched it about a year and a half ago, might give it another try though. I watched My Darling Clementine last night haha, posted about it in RTLMYS, really liked it alot. Haven't seen the others but was already planning on seeing The Ox-Bow Incident.

Like the fella says, in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."

Thanks Harry

I'd also like to suggest Ossessione. It's Luchino Viscont's first film, some recognize it as the first Neo-Realist film although that's disputed. Either way i liked it quite a bit, it's an Italian adaptation of The Postman Always Rings Twice.

I still need to see that. One I'll definitely watch for this countdown...when someone volunteers to run it!

Two of Charles Dicken's classics films from 40s

Great Expectations 1946
Oliver Twist 1948
Definitely watching those two along with Brief Encounter, i really love David Lean.

There will probably be some duplicates in the first post btw coz i'm not checking everytime someone posts haha.

Never mind duplicates LOL .. I saw The Adventures of Tom Sawyer long time ago, I just went to check the year of release, damn!! it's from 1938.
