1994 was the greatest year in film history what are your top 10 films of 1994?

^^ You're a more hardcore fan than me! LOL!

But yeah, dont think we can have another Shawshank! We have to request Stephen King to write another piece on similar lines, then maybe.

Normally sub-plots are a weak link to a movie, but it is the numerous sub-plots in Shawshank that makes it so strong!

When i first heard of IMDB, it was at #2. Behind Godfather I. Now its just way ahead and slowly pulling further away. Go Shawshank!

Its still #1.

I was talking about the votes.

I just "HOPE" that one day you may change your mind about the greatest film ever made...I "HOPE" that one day it will be possible for Hollywood to make movies like shawshank again...CHEERS!!
I hope you change your mind about a lot of things but that won't come to pass

Shawshank is a movie which you see with your ears not eyes!

Still to this day it is considered as one of the biggest disaster of Oscar history along with Taxi Driver not winning it in its year.
The best movies rarely win the Oscar for best picture. Taxi Driver didn't win in 1975, 2001: A Space Odyssey didn't win in 1968, Star Wars didn't win in 1977, Apocalypse Now didn't win in 1979, The Terminator didn't win in 1984, Aliens didn't win in 1986...

There are also the biases: usually the movie that win the oscar for best picture is a live action drama movie without fantasy or science fiction elements, such as The Godfather I and II, or The King's Speech or Titanic.

I've not seen enough from enough years but right now I'd go with 2007.
Some killer years, according to my tastes:

1953: Ugetsu Monogatari & Tokyo Story

1954: Sansho the Bailiff & Seven Samurai

1966: Persona & Andrei Rublev

1968: 2001: A Space Odyssey & Planet of the Apes

1972: Solaris, Aguirre: The Wrath of God & The Godfather

1979: Apocalypse Now & Stalker

1984: Nausicaa, Amadeus (excellent movie, but I forgot to put into my top 100), Once Upon a Time in America & The Terminator

1986: Castle in the Sky, The Hitcher & Aliens

1988: My Neighbor Totoro & Grave of the Fireflies

2001: Mulholland Drive, Spirited Away & Millennium Actress

All these movies are masterpieces in my book. While 1994 had how many masterpieces? I only classify Pulp Fiction as a masterpiece. Shawshank Redemption has a very powerful ending (as Mr. Minio has pointed out) but the whole movie is only
, for me.

Even I dont like sci-fi. Not a big fan. But 84 was right. Amadeus over Terminator any day for me.

About 1994, Shawshank and Pulp Fiction are masterpieces for me. As I said in the previous page, Shawshank is sort of a hall of famer. Should not even be attempted to be ranked.

Other than that, Forrest Gump is another good movie. And to add to that the others released in that year were. Evaluting a year is not about 1-2 good movies in a year. Its the year as a whole. In that respect 1994, trumps most other years.

You're right, Oscars tend to go for dramas/biopics (real ones are good: Titanic and The King's Speech) that attempt to tackle social issues/have people overcome something/disabilities. Kubrick never won an Oscar, Scorsese didn't win until The Departed, and there's loads more other examples you can find if you look

Anyway 1994 I'd give something like:

Pulp Fiction

The Shawshank Redemption

Natural Born Killers

Speed

The Lion King

Forrest Gump

I think 1995 is a stronger year:

Heat
Casino
Toy Story
Se7en
Golden Eye
Leaving Las Vegas
Apollo 13
Braveheart
12 Monkeys

Yeah, 1995 might be my favorite year, even though I haven't seen that much of it.

12 Monkeys, The Usual Suspects, Braveheart, and Billy Madison are all at least
, and Nixon, Toy Story, and Batman Forever are all pretty good.

1997 is really good too. Good Will Hunting, As Good As It Gets, and Donnie Brasco are all great. The Game, LA Confidential, Air Force One, and Hercules are all pretty good, too.

2004 has Eternal Sunshine, The Incredibles, Dodgeball, and Shrek 2, which are great. Ocean's Twelve, The Prisoner of Azkaban, 50-First Dates, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and Anchorman are all pretty good, too.

ad Shawshank Redemption has a very powerful ending (as Mr. Minio has pointed out) but the whole movie is only
, for me.
Only? Only the second highest rating?
