Robert Redford is currently shooting The Conspirator, a film about Mary Surratt, the woman executed for taking part in the Lincoln assassination.

This is the first I've heard of this movie, but I'm extremely interested, even if I can see why a story of her has never been filmed before. She's not exactly a sympathetic character, and I do wonder what the moral center of this film will be.

According to a bit of research, Mary always proclaimed her innocence, but it seems to me that the testimony by a couple of the conspirators leads me to believe she wasn't. But, there was thought that she thought it would be a kidnapping of Lincoln, not his murder. Also, she was tried by a military tribunal instead of a judge and jury, and Andrew Johnson ignored the military plea for mercy to not have her hanged.

Anyway, James MacAvoy plays her lawyer and Robin Wright Penn plays Surratt. I just hope the film doesn't play fast and loose with history. It might make for a pretty interesting story but I hate it when they veer too far away from the facts.
