The Best Godfather Film?

Alright, it was bound to happen sooner or later and if it already has, I apologize. I love arguing this topic with friends and strangers, alike. So, what'll it be? One, two, or three? And if you haven't seen them, you best go out and find them before I give you an orange...

Well, seing that the first Godfather is the no. 1 film on my list, I'll have to vote for the first one.
The second one is one of the rare films that are as good, if not better than the first. It's kinda different though, it's not exactly a continuation of the first one, but rather it runs parallel to it and complements and fulfils it in many ways. That's what makes it a great movie and a great sequel.
Almost everyone I know thinks that the third Godfather movie is not up to the same standards as the first two...but I disagree absoultely! I saw it about a month ago, and it is definitely a good movie, as good as the first two! Overall it is the BEST trilogy ever filmed, 10/10!

I agree...I simply loved both ones and I honestly can't say one is better than the other.

Cheers!

I've got to go with the Part II even though I love all three of them. I adore Robert De Niro and thought he did an amazing job with the part he was given. And Al Pacino was at the top of his game with that role.

Although, I don't think you can really compare the first two to the third one, it's so different. More great performances from Pacino and Talia Shire. And the final scene of the film? How does that not stay with you? But Sofia Coppola? Ugh. I think Daddy might have been playing favorites instead of talent when casting that one.

I agree...the Third wasn't as great as the other 2 especially for the acting.

It's still part of the trilogy though. It's like SW the Phantom Menace, even if it's not as good as the original 3 it's still part of the whole saga.

Cheers!

That's what I mean Crash...the last scene sent shivers down my spine, for me it was one of the most unforgettable scenes in the whole trilogy! Michael redeemed himself for all his sins (in both movies) by paying the ultimate price...and the scream was absolutely horrific! I also love how Connie takes over the power in the family when the Godfather hands over to Vincenzo! GENIUS!!

As for Sophie Coppola, it doesn't matter (I guess Daddy probably was playing favourites a bit by then), still a good performance.

What the hell does that mean? Give you an orange?

By the By, I've never seen any of them. Except the scene where the guy comes out of the bathroom and blasts the guys in the restaurant away. It is actually a mission in this game I got recently called Hitman: Codename 47 (great game by the way, a must have). You come out of the bathroom to find a cop and some others at a table, and you have to blow them away.

Okay first post. The second was most definitly the best. But only because of old Italy and Ronert De Niro, I think there should have been more of that. But the third just totaly bored me. I think it also loses some of its shine next to newer flicks such as casino, pulp fiction ect

For thou who asked...an orange in the Godfather films is the symbol that somebody's going to die or get seriously damaged. Throughout all three movies, whenever a orange is present, some awful event is sure to be right around the corner. Just a fun little thing Coppola or some other power that be threw in.

MovieForums Extra

An Orange??? Are you serious?! I can't believe I watched the whole triloy (several times) and never noticed a single orange (except maybe in the end of the first one)...Gees, I never thought of that! I gotta go back to the VCR and watch all three again

While you're watching Part II, check out the flag behind De Niro in one of his scenes from 1917. When he's talking, there's a flag behind him with fifty stars.

Too bad there were only 48 stars in 1917. Oops.

The Godfather Part II is so superior to the first film, which was already superior as well. Part III just doesn't do it for me tho.

Believe it or not, I just saw these three films recently. I knew some things would happen in advance, but that didn't really spoil it for me.

I can't decide which was better: the first or the second. I almost consider them the same movie. Part Three would have been just as good if not for some terrible acting at times.

Hey Commish, glad to hear you finally got around to seeing all these films!! Wouldn't you agree it's the best trilogy of all time?!

Am I the only one that had goosebumps at the end of Godfather III?

It's one heckuva Trilogy, but I liked Star Wars more - probably because I didn't get to see Godfather the same way. I saw Star Wars as a kid basically. It's kind of hard to explain.

But yes, even if I didn't enjoy it more than Star Wars, that doesn't mean it wasn't a better piece of filmmaking. And yes, the ending of Godfather Part III, in my opinion, salvaged it from some of the poor acting earlier on.

Glad we se eye to eye For me, the ending was not only the culmination of the movie but rather the climax of all three movies, if you really think about it...I'm talking about the scene where Michael's daughter get'shot on the steps...I just realised that the final scene is the handing over of power, but the shooting scene is the clincher!

My dad pointed this out to me: he swore, earlier in the movie, on his children's lives that if he were given the chance to redeem himself, he would sin no more.

What happens? 30 seconds later he's asked for permission to kill someone, and he grants it. As a result, his daughter is taken from him.

By the way: Andy Garcia was okay, but too casual at times. The actress who playd Mary was Coppola's daughter, and stunk the joint up. I couldn't stand here - she half-ruined the movie for me.

I think the first and second ones are the best. The 3rd one kind of gave the series a bad name.
