Past the top fifteen or so, such a list is so maleable. Ask me two weeks from now, I'd probably shuffle a bunch of them around in the order, then a month after that another shift, etc. I wouldn't kick many off though, that's a pretty good one-hundred flicks from my personal taste.

Pretty solid lists guys. There are a few in there that Kong didn't care for, but the vast majority of them were very good.

Kong hates making lists like these though. It's sooo much work, and Kong is never satisfied with the end result.

it seems as though everyone has been making top 100 lists lately for every kind of medium of entertainment. i have come to the conclusion that they are all generally correct, but there really is no difference between one created by a "committee" of "specialists" and one created by some dude.

i'm sure you two have narrowed your lists down enough, but not to the point where each single one is always and unarguably meant to be the superior of the previous. you both have the gist of the at-least-decent movies of the 90s (and of course, i, and nobody else on the planet, will be in total agreement)

IF i were ever to take the time to create such a list, i would take a note from Ebert (the fat one), and simply create a list of the "great" ones without feeling an obligation to rank, and just acknowledge that each one is a singular experience and that there is no way to standardize it all to that degree...

Hmmmm. Holden did'nt see The Two Jakes (1990) there in your list, Seeing thought your No.1 of all time is Chinatown (1974). Did you Not like the moive???

Yeah, I like The Two Jakes quite a bit. It's no Chinatown (what is?), yet it does succeed on its own terms and is a decent sequel. Too bad Nicholson and Towne had such a rift over it, and the trilogy will never be completed. I'm a big defender of The Two Jakes, since it was pretty badly trashed upon release and dismissed as a disappointment by most audiences and critics. I dug it right away.

But The Two Jakes was also released in a very strong year. As much as I like it, frankly it isn't anywhere near the quality of flicks like GoodFellas, Miller's Crossing or Jacob's Ladder.

Aren't those two the same movie?

Except that Leon is the cut everybody in the world except America got, and it's about twenty minutes longer than the re-edited and re-titled The Professional. The bulk of Leon's extra scenes come in the middle of the picture, when we actually see Leon take Mathilda out on hits (not just the paint-ball sniper shot on the jogger in the park, but learning how to enter apartments and go face-to-face with the mark), which makes more clear why she thought she was then ready to take on Stansfield by herself. There's also more overt stuff about Mathilda's attraction for Leon. A young girl learning how to kill and getting drunk and falling for an older man was deemed unacceptable for American audiences, so it was excised.

And now you know.

Yeh I am a fan of the movie too. I believe that to many people try to compare it to Chinatown (1974) which decreases it value. It’s funny how both of them were released in very strong years.

just out of curiosity, did i not see american pie on any of your lists? why was that excluded? one movie that is a must see is orgazmo. trey parker and matt stone, the creators of south park, are in it. trey is a mormon in utah who becomes a porn star just to get money for a wedding. im tellin ya, u gotta see it!!!

If I were to make a list like this, which I wouldn't, I'd include these films that I didn't see on either list:

Both of you forgot 12 Angry Men.

I haven't seen the 1997 remake of the 1957 original with Henry Fonda, but I've seen the original.

It would be difficult for me to include a remake if I liked the original better. That's why I wouldn't include Scorsese's remake of CAPE FEAR or Van Sant's remake of PSYCHO. Even though they were both good films, in my humble opinion, they don't compare to the originals.

I can't speak for Holden Pike or Malcolm X, but that's why I wouldn't have included 12 ANGRY MEN.

Plus, it was made-for-cable TV. More importantly, it wasn't very good, average at best.

It used the exact same dialog as the original. Same camera angles too. In fact, it was exactly like the original, just with a new, better cast and naturally better photography.

Does the fact that it is not black&white makes it any less good?

How hypocritical.

I think it's absolutely brilliant how you can draw your own conclusions and then pass judgement on people based on said conclusions.

Herod, it's called logic. You start with a few assumptions. Then you draw conclussions. Then you draw conclusion some more conclusions based on said conclusions.
You can repeat the process indefinitely.

Assumption 1: It used the exact same dialog as the original.
Assumption 2: Same camera angles too.
Assumption 3: it had a better cast
Assumption 4: Photography has become better during the last 50 years, thanks to technology.
Conclusion 1: The film had better photography.

Does Holden disagree with any of assumptions 1 to 4?
The fact that "it was made-for-cable TV" was even mentioned, shows IMHO that the source for his disagreeing with me is a elitism.

Thusly, A1..4 remain true, and so does C1.

C2 says that Holden's opinion was hypocritical.
