Getting into the horror genre...

If you want to get into horror, ya gonna have to learn to live with jump scares!

I disagree. He/she can just avoid lazy film makers like Wan who overuse them. A jump here or there which comes out of nowhere can be fun. Right through a movie and especially when you can see it coming, is very annoying, swanny.

My point was that a LOT of horror movies use jump scares to varying degrees, so if you want to watch horror movies, it's best to just jump into the water and not worry about that.

Obviously OP can get away with finding movies lacking in jump scares, but OP is limiting themselves definitely.

Mario Bava is the greatest director of horror movies that has ever lived. Watching his films is essential, he took the horror genre and turned it into beautiful art.

I just thought of one I really enjoyed and pretty sure no jumpies. An aussie vigilante movie called Red Hills. Ryn Kwanten from True Blood is in it. Beautiful setting. Categorised on imdb as Thriller/Western

Horror fans, would Martyrs be too much for a new viewer? I dont recall any jumpies but it's pretty full on with disturbing content in a psychological sense. Probably my favourite horror movie as far as film making nd my own reaction.

The original. I refuse to see the remake.

Just thought of another one I really enjoyed and I dont generally like found footage genre. I cant remember if it has jumpies so probably not many, or they worked for the film, otherwise if they were eye rolly I would remember them

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1740707/

and another that was surprisingly good (same as above; I dont remember jumpies)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1278340/

Oh and this one really surprised me

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1323045/

I'm on a roll here, but just one more so I dont overload the OP

I can be prone to claustrophobia but I loved this. Reynolds was outstanding.

Yeah, whatever you do, DO NOT watch the remake. I was curious to see where they would take it, because I've come across some recent remakes that have been pretty solid. It was basically what you'd expect. Just a giant waste of their efforts and my time. They got rid of everything that was essential to the story. On top of that, the ending was...

I've seen so many disparaging comments, Monnom. Can you give me a spoiler for the end? I'm slightly curious what they did with it, but not enough to watch.

Back to tv shows, I just saw the trailer for American Gods which looks amazing (I posted it in the tv subforum and I highly recommend checking it out if you like screen blood). My favourite showrunner - Bryan Fuller, and Michael Green who made a nice little tv show called The River. A one off season. Once again it's found footage in the Amazon and each episode explores an amazonian myth. I dont recall jumpies.

Hey

Which movies would you recommend to someone who wants to get into the horror genre?
William Castle and Roman Polanski are two guys you should look at 60's

The Innocents (1961)
Seance on a Wet Afternoon (1964)
The Collector (1965)
10 Rillington Place (1971)
Martin (1977)
Psycho II (1983)

If you want more modern films...
Session 9 (2002)
Triangle (2009)
Frozen (2010)
The Witch (2016)

Well, simply put, the girl becomes a badass heroine, shooting her way to freedom, survives and lives happily ever after. Give or take some psychological scarring.
To be honest, I don't fully remember the details, but that should be enough to give you the gist. The directors just wanted it to be less depressing and they achieved just that.

Also, they replace the skinning scene with just propping her up on a giant crucifix surrounded by fire.

What's funny is that I found the remake to be the epitome of "torture porn". As some like to describe the original. Because the remake uses the torture as a spectacle rather than a significant plot device. In the original the torture is not something just there for the sake of shock value but actually served a purpose. Considering the remake changed the outcome of the story, it lost that substance. But that's just me.

Some great mentions here. I second, triple, quadruple Triangle. Definitely give that one a go.

Good grief. Thanks champ.

Yeah the ending made the movie for me and had me dwelling on the conversation they had for DAYS. Not yelling, just emphasising. Changing that they should have just written an entire new script. Talk about murdering a movie.

there are some channels on youtube that focus on those classic campy [and not so campy] horror movies as well [most of them are goofy, with such titles as: "The Incredibly Strange creature that gave up living to become mixed up Zombies" - a very bad movie]

Creature Features

Midnight Macabre Films

RethroThrills

And do your self a favor and watch any old horror movie with Vincent Price in it. Those are classics

Legend in my own mind
It's a genre I don't bother with to be honest. Watched a few when I was a kid but as an adult the closest I got is 'Saw' 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 etc Not really horror but the first 2 were half decent, The Ring and the Blair witch project which were utter drivel.

OK some more recommendations because I;m having so much fun travelling down memory lane with this thread. These I recommend for a rainy weekend when you're stuffed after a hrd week and just want to grab a bevy and some popcorn, kick off your shoes, and disengage your brain. I know you said no to horror comedy and didnt like scary movie (to be honest I dont even remember it) but I cant let a horror rec thread go without mentioning this sub genre.

Tucker and Dale -v- Evil. I thought it was a really funny parody of rich dumb kids -v- rednecks.

Black Sheep. Kiwi Australian collaboration about mutant sheep and a vegan hippy

Sean of the Dead. Typical british humour which I find hysterical

Sme guys - Hot Fuzz

Cockneys -v- zombies

Not horror per se but depends on how you define the genre, but if you like the irreverant british dark humour I cant recommend this enough

Has had me on the floor on each rewatch. Caused an absolute stir with SJWs at the time because it's a parody of Pakistani British jihadis and a white guy called Barry who is more jihadi than his paki friends. Hilarious.
