A WW2 pacific movie

Decades ago I saw on TV a movie happening on a Pacific island during WW2. The whole island was in a thick forest with Japanese soldiers all over the place. Except on one end of the island where Americans had a fort similar to wild west army forts. There was one hundred meters clearing between that fort and the forest.

The plot was that one group of soldiers landed on the wrong side of the island and had to go all the way to the other end of the island to reach the fort. Only two soldiers survived to the clearing part. As they waited at the end of the forest they knew that Japanese soldiers are also there to shoot at them as they run into the clearing. Still, they made a dash for it, zig zagging their way to the fort but did not make it - thry were both shot dowm.

Anyone knows the movie?

Are you sure it was WW2 and the enemy were Japanese? Similar things often happen in movies about Vietnam.

It sounds an awful lot like Objective, Burma! with Errol Flynn.

So is it confirmed? Too Late the Hero
