"..I know the TRUTH.."

16 Blocks, Dir. by Richard Donner, 2006.

Checked out this flick with wifey on an impromptu movie date tonight. I hadn't caught the trailers going in, but on the strength, I'm usually feeling Bruce Willis as an actor and hiphop familiars lyrical tongue terrorist Mos Def is a solid up-and-comer who continues to find his legs on the big screen.

The basic premise of the whole hustle is that Bruce Willis is a washed out cop at the end of the line who gets tagged with escorting an eye witness who has seen too much, played by Mos Def, 16 blocks from his jail cell to the city courthouse. Along the way there is a transaction which pits both men against NYC's finest as they battle their way through the grimy streets of New York.

I'm not sure what it was, but I was feeling the plight of both these cats throughout the whole film, especially the character portrayed by Bruce Willis who seems more than worse for wear immediately when the film kicked in. Mos Def is on a mission with his character, a loveable and tragic personality all on his own that you feel is worth the stretch it will take to make it the full 16 blocks.

David Morse plays the proverbial bad guy in the flick, but there were times when I'd stop and think my man was on a whole other format that I could get down with, even though his motives of self-preservation left him on front street more than once -- an honest-to-god corrupt type mother****er that you didn't necessarily want to see get moped out in the end.

Not always a fan of Donners work, the shots in the film -- especially close up shots on the actors, really captured pain and desperation on the faces of all the major characters involved. There is something going on in the brain of Willis' character and the entire film you wonder what the deal is with my man. In the end, this film is about morality and redemption and I think Donner played his cards straight to come up on the proper flush.
