Monster Squad

Task #22: A movie featuring a monster.

Pure nostalgia on this one. As an adult, I see a lot of story issues, but damn if the pace of this film is not fast. I watched my signed Tom Noonan dvd tonight.

Great effects and make-up work from Winston, creepy moments and a lot of fun. Would love to see a remake done.

Monster Squad is great. It's something that I also think is ripe for a remake. Though the 80's-ness of it is a plus for me.

The Fog

Task #18: A horror remake.

I'm giving this film a generous rating because there were moments of imagery that could have lead to a great horror film. Footsteps on the ceiling, the boat in the fog, a few more little things that made me think that they might have cared. Yet most of these things are lost in the stupidity that is this film. Let me stress that again, this film is bad.

Between the horrid acting, the cheap effects, or the laziness of those involved, The Fog is one of the least scary films I've ever seen. They opted to go for a more "ghost" like feel with the dead instead of what Carpenter did. Which meant they relied more on CGI and it did not look good. The film is more concerned with getting good looking actors on the screen than it is with building any sort of suspense or terror. It suffers greatly because of this. At no point in the film was I thrilled or scared. At no point did the film build any sort of suspense for me. I am actually amazed I watched the whole thing. I felt like skipping through a lot of it because the film was treading water.

A terrible film, even by horror remake standards. That's saying a lot.

Slither

Task #27: A horror B movie.
Task #24: A horror movie made in this decade.

Before he was guarding the galling, James Gunn had intergalactic slugs hit earth and take over the humans of a small town. The result was a hilarious take on the classic b-movie horror genre, much in the style of Night of the Creeps.

Comedy-Horror is one of the tougher genres to get right, I for one love the films that attempt it. Slither is one that manages to get it right. With Elizabeth Banks, Nathan Fillion and Michael Rooker, the cast works wonders together, with Rooker having to undergo heavy make-up for his "transformation".

The Reaping

Task #12: A epidemic infection or disease movie.
Task #26: A horror movie with mostly bad reviews.

A good idea that is poorly executed. The bad reviews are justified in this non-scary religious fable about the ten plagues hitting a southern town of the states. Swank and Elba go to investigate as they are miracle debunkers. Guess what, they can't debunk this one, which tests both their faith.

I was really bored with the performances and the plotting here. I know there is a good idea somewhere in this pile, but it's nowhere near the surface in this piece. Skip it.

Event Horizon

Task #23: A 90's Sci-fi Horror
Task #3: A movie where the protagonist or good guy dies.

The best Paul W.S. Anderson film. The idea of the ship opening a gateway to hell is a terrifying one and one that I would love to see revisited in a possible remake, Most of ther gruesome images were left on the cutting room floor to obtain an R-rating, so the thoughts of what this film could really be is hurtful.

Despite some poor CGI effects, the film has some great set pieces and visuals. Sri/Fi Horror done right can be really creepy. You're out there alone. I feel like this film is underrated.

The Curse of Downers Grove

Task #5: A teen horror

Maybe I should have used this as my "bad" reviews film. This film is bad on so many levels. The lack of horror, even though it's described as one, the lack of story, the lack of talented people in the cast, behind the camera, etc. I can go on and on about how terrible this movie is but I won't. I will spare you the trouble of reading about this poor excuse for a film.

Not sure if this should go in spoilers:

WARNING: "babadook" spoilers below
Do you think The Babadook was real?

Here's my view - http://www.movieforums.com/community...75#post1510875

So yeah i think it was about
WARNING: "babadook" spoilers below
the womans battle with mental illness more than any monsters which is why i don't mind that the babadook is lackluster itself.

WARNING: spoilers below

Considering this was a horror movie i didnt even give that a thought but what about the boy then?

As i said in that post i linked, i can't copy and past the full thing for some reason so i'll just re-type the relevant part:

WARNING: "babadook" spoilers below
Obviously this makes some of it a bit hard to explain, but during all the nuts supernatural stuff in the last twent minutes we don't actually get to see what the kid sees.

To add to that now:
WARNING: "babadook" spoilers below

Basically i think the kid started out with a perfectly natural for someone of his age fear of the boogeyman and because of his mums fragile mental state she amplified it; and most of the kids terror throughout the film is him reacting to how his mum is acting or to what his mum is saying is happening. I'd need to watch it again to be sure if this explains everything but that's my general theory. I had that theory as soon as i finished it then i read some stuff after from people that thinks the same. i think it makes the film alot better.

So grief over her husband dying in front of her + undiagnosed post-natal depression which if left to fester can be really bad to say the least (this is just my own theory) + lack of sleep + her kids fear of the boogeyman = The Babadook. Just my opinion.

WARNING: spoilers below
well sure that would definitely take the movie up a few notches.most of her sightings of him are when shes sleep deprived and dont think we get to see the boy actually see him? so you could be right.
the only things off would be the knocking on the door and the book being delivered.
Honestly, even though i only watched it in May i've watched alot of movies since then and haven't thought about it much so can i ask you:

WARNING: "babadook" spoilers below
Why would the book being delivered and the knocking on the door be off? I don't remember either enough so i'm honestly asking.

WARNING: spoilers below

after she ripped it apart and threw it out- theres a knock on the door-she opens it and no one is there.she then goes back inside before someone starts pounding on the door.when she goes back outside someones left the book there and glued it all together. so it couldnt have been herself who had done that, unless you`re thinking thats just a coincedence and some did it as a joke or something-unrelated to the events in the house.
WARNING: "babadook" spoilers below
Fair enough. All i'd say is if i'm correct then we are supposed to be looking at this from someone who is extremely delusional and possibly has undiagnosed/untreated Schizophrenia or something similar. In my theory we are watching her perception of events rather than what is actually happening. Her obsession with the book and quick turns from of and out of mind could account for her having it in her mind that she threw out the book even though she didn't. She may have ripped it up and pieced it back together herself and the throwing it out is something that she imagines happened. The knocks on the door are easily accounted for by her delusions.

That's just a way to explain it if you don't agree with the theory then your points are completely valid. The only thing that can really be truly explainable is something the kid did since we are seeing it from her perspective in my opinion.

im not saying i disagree,i think its an interesting take on it that i hadnt considered,i was just bringing up that particular scenario because the other events could easily be percieved as you said but that scene would be bit harder to explain.it does make the movie more interesting as you said.

but still as a horror it did quite do it for me
haha. I know you weren't, i was just enjoying discussing it with you. Do you disagree with anything i said in that last post, BTW?

And yeah that's fine; it's not a major favourite of mine really but i did enjoy the aspects we were discussing quite a bit and thought it greatly improved the film. If i took it as a straight monster movie i'd be in your boat too.
