4. Mad Max: Fury Road
5. The Avengers
6. Dirty Harry
7. Terminator 2: Judgment Day
8. The Road Warrior

Now, the big question is, is Yoda going to officialise this list or not?

Avatar only holds the record for highest-grossing weekend.
Rocky only won the Academy Award for best picture.
Rocky is not at all action the way I see it. It's a drama.

As for Avatar... well appearently it's not good enough. Also, maybe people see it more as an adventure drama or it's simply not good enough. I like the film but didn't even consider it for my list.

BTW. Raiders was my #1 too.
Gotta agree with MM on this one. Rocky is good, but even by the incredibly loose standards of this countdown it barely qualifies as an action movie - if at all. Interestingly, a quick scan over the list indicates that there are no sports movies on this list whatsoever (unless you stretch the definition a bit to include Point Break, of course, but even if you did it would still be an anomaly). The other Best Picture winners to crack the list included Braveheart, Gladiator, and Return of the King, which all fit the historical drama/high-fantasy genres but contain enough strong action to warrant not just consideration but placement on the list. Rocky...not so much.

As for Avatar - yeah, it may have had a huge box-office upon its release, but there's obviously more to judging a film's worth than on the basis of its earnings. The Force Awakens is also one of the highest-earning films ever made, yet I seem to recall you and I getting into arguments over its worth as an actual film on this very site (and yet it earned an honourable mention here anyway). Besides, Avatar has become something of a joke in the past seven years because it managed to be this massive financial success yet hasn't had a lasting impression on people or popular culture beyond being an easy punchline thanks to its emphasis on visual style over narrative substance (best exemplified by all the jokes comparing its plot to Dances with Wolves or Pocahontas only in space). So I'm not at all surprised or disappointed that it didn't make this list.

28 days...6 hours...42 minutes...12 seconds
1. Terminator 2: Judgement Day
2. The Matrix
3. The Dark Knight
4. Aliens
5. The Raid 2
6. Mad Max: Fury Road
7. The Rock
8. Die Hard
9. Kill Bill Vol 1
10. Hot Fuzz
11. The Professional
12. Casino Royale
13. 300
14. Raiders of the Lost Ark
15. Fast Five
16. Star Wars
17. The Bourne Identity
18. Equilibrium
19. John Wick
20. Predator
21. Point Break
22. The Avengers
23. Heat
24. Commando
25. True Lies

So two films of mine did not make the list. I mentioned this before but I picked Fast Five because it is the 5th film in a franchise and it actually made the series BETTER. Great action set pieces with the cars and chase scenes.

Equilibrium I thought had a decent shot at being somewhere from 100-80, but I guess not enough people have seen it???? It belongs on this list more than some questionable titles, IMO.

As you can see, I had Die Hard at 8, but am not mad that it took the top spot. That film and T2 are the definitive action films of all-time. So you can say I'm happy. Mad Max: Fury Road will go down as one of the best action films of all-time as well.

It made my original top 100 but I haven't felt much of an urge to revisit it in the past decade. I imagine that it has to do with the film surrounding it not really holding up - it is kind of a mess of dystopia clichés wrapped in a dull post-Matrix aesthetic, which may overshadow it on an action level.

This was my list:

1) The Grandmaster (2013)
2) The Killer (1989)
3) Tokyo Drifter (1966)
4) Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)
5) Hero (2002)
6) Oldboy (2003)
7) Sin City (2005)
8) North by Northwest (1959)
9) The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)
10) Scarface (1983)
11) Miracle Mile (1988)
12) Rio Bravo (1959)
13) Snatch (2000)
14) The Incredibles (2004)
15) The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
16) Dirty Harry (1971)
17) Battle Royale (2000)
18) Goldfinger (1964)
19) Grosse Pointe Blank (1997)
20) Léon: The Professional (1994)
21) Enter the Dragon (1973)
22) The World's End (2013)
23) Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
24) Inception (2010)
25) The Matrix (1999)

Could've included plenty of other films if I'd have considered them action flicks or if I'd thought of them. I kind of composed my list with a wet-finger approach. I also didn't really care that much about the order. Still think it's a decent list that communicates my feelings about what I personally think is good action.

The action parts were the worst and most frustrating moments in Avatar in my opinion.

Rocky is not even close to being an action film.

Capt. Spaulding, nice to see you having Bloodsport on your list, which I watched again just a few days ago. An actioner with JCVD, Bolo Yeung, and Donald "Ogre" Gibb all in the same movie? Cannot and did not miss!

Also good to see The Driver and Deep Rising (the latter of which I can't get anyone to cop to liking).

mate!! totally agree with the list man!! but the raid shouldn't be there.. not as good as the first film

Looking back on this, I'm actually pleased with how well it did. I still think I would have set different rules for ordering, but otherwise I think it's a very solid action movie list. I hope I can redo this sometime in the near future and get a genuine action list up and running on the forum.
