Forgotten 90's or 2000's movie.

This bizarre movies main character has something tramatic happen to him and he goes searching for his death. He ends up hitch hiking and encounters an escape mental patient on the side of the road trying to tear down a road sign that says do not pick up hitch hikers. Both are picked up by a man that starts doing howard cosell impressions, the mental patient and the driver are having a blast being annoying until the main character has enough and demands to be let out. Movie ends with the main characters supposedly in his car parked on a bombing range waiting to die.

Do you think the film you saw might have been a comedy of sorts? I wonder if you might be recalling some scenes from the 1985 film 'Better Off Dead' starring John Cusack.
