I'm going to say it, an overrated director.

His best movie is The Letter. Warner Brothers with its studio sytem had better technical resources than his usual producer in the forties, Samuel Goldwyn.

I think he's got some decent flicks, at least from what I've seen. The Best Years of Our Lives and Ben-Hur are probably my 2 favorites of his thus far.

Bright light. Bright light. Uh oh.
He made an enormous amount of movies which remain highly watchable to this day. So far, I've missed all his silents but I've seen most of his talkies.

My Wyler Rankings

The Best Years of Our Lives 8.5/10
Ben-Hur 8/10
How to Steal a Million 7.5/10
Wuthering Heights 7/10
Roman Holiday 6.5/10
The Heiress 6.5/10

I like them all in their own way though.

I've seen Roman Holiday, Ben-Hur, and Funny Girl. I would rank them in that order. I may have seen How to Steal A Million, I can't for the life of me remember though.

I like Wyler a lot - mainly because he seemed quite happy to jump around from genre to genre and did most well. Ben Hur is the only one of his films I didn't think much of - so disjointed and, sorry Charlton Heston fans, badly acted. Still watchable though.

I've given the following ratings:

Wuthering Heights

The Collector

Roman Holiday

How to Steal a Million

Ben-Hur

I've got a copy of The Best Years of Our Lives but haven't watched it yet and there are lots of others I want to see.

I have only seen Wuthering Heights so far that i enjoyed, it's also one of my mums favourite movies.I'm interested in watching more from him, probably starting with The Best Years of Our Lives or Ben Hur.

Geeze, I thought it would be faster to just snap a picture of my shelf, but I see things are out of order (grumble), and I don't currently have cases for everything, anyway. Really need to spend a full weekend cataloging and organizing, but I never seem to have the time. Have a band gig, tonight. Oh, well.

But looking up my collection on Film Aficionado, these are the William Wyler titles I own...

The Barbary Coast
Ben-Hur
The Best Years of Our Lives
The Big Country
Carrie
(1952)
The Children's Hour
Come and Get It
Dead End
The Desperate Hours
Detective Story
Friendly Persuasion
Funny Girl
The Good Fairy
The Heiress
Hell's Heroes
How to Steal a Million
Jezebel
The Letter
The Liberation of L.B. Jones
Little Foxes
Mrs. Miniver
Roman Holiday
The Westerner
Wuthering Heights
(1939)

As well as the documentary "Diected by William Wyler", plus I've seen a few that I don't own.

If I had to pick one as his best, I'd go with The Big Country, but I love The Letter, Detective Story and Roman Holiday, too.
