You can't make a rainbow without a little rain.
Just got an e-mail from a bank saying we will only be able to use their drive-thru as the building will now be closed to customers "until further notice."

No more walking in the bank to see a teller or a banker on the floor.
(And here I was supposed to do some banking there for my mom tomorrow).

The e-mail says you can utilize all banking services via the drive-thru... wonder if I should put it to the test by taking some wrapped coins as there's always a sign saying you can't send wrapped coins through the tube in the drive thru.

Or pull up to the window and say I want to discuss options of opening a new CD vs. an annuity or investing in a money market account and maybe talking about obtaining a loan vs. refinancing on a home - let's lay everything out and go over it in detail shall we? (While the guy in the car behind me just wants to cash his paycheck!)

I'd like to see someone try to discuss banking options at the drive-thru if they don't drive. Can they just walk up to the drive-thru window and ask?

You asked when it will be "over." I'm pretty sure nobody took that to mean "when will this virus be eradicated forever?" because that's not how this works, for the reasons you just noted. They took it, quite reasonably, to mean "when will the crisis peak?" or "when will things start to get back to normal?"

You'll have to phrase things more precisely, I'm afraid, assuming your goal is actually to have your questions answered, which is a premise I'm finding it a bit harder to believe with each passing day.

And honestly, even if you did mean to ask something as strange as the above, and people did not realize that, it still should have been obvious from the responses how people were taking the question. The natural thing to do there is to recognize the miscommunication, explain it, and clarify what you meant. What you definitely shouldn't do is something like the above, where you never note precisely what you mean, and instead phrase your response as a disagreement or contradiction. That's a waste of everyone's time.

Taking the time to ask the right questions, and carefully consider answers before disagreeing with them, would go a long way here. When it's done in a thread asking about some perceived plot hole, it can be a little grating, but is mostly harmless. On this topic information and clarity are actually important, though, so you should adjust your threshold for this stuff accordingly. And hopefully those habits will be calibrated better going forward on less important topics, too.
Oh sorry I thought there was a contradiction based on how people seem to be talking about it, but my mistake. I apologize.

But if the virus is not going to be eradicated forever, does that mean the economy is going to open back up then? Do they realize that it's not going to go away forever, and they will soon have to open up again either way?

I don't think so because I believe businesses are restricted by law to service walk-ups at drive-thrus.
I saw a sign to that extent at the Wendy's drive-thru today: safety reasons - they can't have pedestrians in line with cars.

The e-mail did say that if customers need to access a safe deposit box at branches with no drive-thru, you'd have to call to make an appointment to be let into the building.

When I was a teenager, I used to ride my bicycle up to the drive-thru window at the bank, but that was many years ago, and the laws have probably changed since then.

The Sundance Kid wasn't a colleague and friend of yours was he?
Just wondering whether I should start calling you Butch instead of Gbg from now on

My boss was on the flight to Azores alongside someone that was infected. All the workers that are on Azores are in quarantine. He took a flight to the Continent (Portugal) and decided to not stay in voluntary quarantine and instead came to the company walking every sector countless times a day, without mask or gloves, and only saw him washing his hands once. He later asked her daughter, that is a secretary, for her to go home because he was afraid she caught the virus. When the CEO's asked him why he didn't stay home, he replied: because at home I can contaminate my wife.

Now, this is just a short example on why I don't like bosses, I don't care about the company I work in, I just hope they don't profit a lot, because they clearly don't share any profits, because, by the example above, they don't care about there employs. I'm a professional kind of guy, and sometimes I have to remind myself (when I'm doing a good work) that they don't deserve it. And this is why I'm very fun of regimes that don't privatize anything and focus on public enterprises/services, Cuba for instance. People work there all life to make profit for someone that doesn't care about them, at least the basic.

Ned, I'm going to send you and your sister positive thoughts You all will be OK, be careful but don't worry, there's plenty of food it just might take the store a few days to restock. I'm signing off for the night and I wish you and your family the best
Im Not as worried about it as other people because strange thing is we as in people in WV had really bad flu outbreak in January and thousands got sick and some doctors are wondering if we already got it in WV and recovered from it.

I dont know what it is about WV but many hear get flu and phemonia shots all the time or have remedy's for colds passed down from people who lives through a really bad fever in WV in 1800s.

I think its very possible Corona has been around a while and can be beaten but like with lots of phemonia people can die sadly or recover.

I think people should not panic and think stores cant restock. Trump and Congress aside this is America and we are strong people and I believe Corona will die and we will live.

Well, I've been feeling rough since yesterday.

Sore throat, temperature.

No cough or chest problems though.

I don't think this is Covid-19... but I phoned my doc anyway to be sure.

They can't see me until Thursday.

Thursday next week.

9 days to see the doc and get a test done.

It then takes up to 7 days to get the result.

16 days total.

All the panicking, panic mongering, panicking, and the panic mongering, and all the panicking on top of that... then add to that all the panic mongering as well... it takes over 2 weeks to just get a test.

I won't be going for the appointment next Thursday.
If this is Covid-19, it'll be gone by this weekend anyway.

But 'it's nothing compared to the flu' so why you would even phone the doctor?

Blegh.

Just needed to check because I have an 80 year old father with a heart condition, and a 78 year old mother with a pacemaker who almost died 2 years ago.

Covid-19 has a knack for killing the elderly and sick.

I usually use the supermarket branch but hopefully those are still open. I had to walk through the Dunkin' Donuts drive thru this morning because you can't fit a truck. If that ends up being my biggest issue, I'll take it.

Where do you live? In Portugal you can get to a designated place, you don't even leave the car, they do all the testings and call you with the results. Also if you're infected doctors go to your house to perform routine checks, only severe cases are sent to the hospitals.

Just avoid contact for a fortnight irrespective of whether you have Covid-19.

Exactly why it should be taken seriously!

Sorry if I'm rude but I'm right
Throat irritation here which induced occasional coughing (keep your sex jokes to yourself). No high temperature or anything else. Normally you wouldn't even think about it, but now with Coronavirus I'm subconsciously ****ting my pants. Either way I'm staying home for a month in case I have an asymptomatic version of the Corona.

In the UK.

We have the NHS here.
Means everything doesn't work, or works incredibly slowly.

Also, doctors haven't done house calls in the UK since like, the 1960s.

We have something here called ShropDoc though.
Emergency line where you can call out a doctor to your home. It's like a secondary 999 number.
Most of the time though, they don't answer the phone... or they keep you on the phone for so long you get fed up, hang up, and call 999 anyway.

Then there's the 111 non-emergency number.
Which is a premium rate number, not free like 999... and they do the same. They either don't answer, or keep you on the phone with so many questions you hang up and call 999 instead.

Idris Elba has it now

Do you know what a roller pigeon is, Barney? They climb high and fast, then roll over and fall just as fast toward the earth. There are shallow rollers and deep rollers. You can’t breed two deep rollers, or their young will roll all the way down, hit, and die. Officer Starling is a deep roller, Barney. We should hope one of her parents was not.

Damn. We have the 112 (Emergency number) and 808 24 24 24 (SNS 24 - 24 Hours Health), they're both free. 112 is the typical emergency number, like the 911 in America. The SNS 24 is a hotline that you call and a doctor or specialist answers the phone, you say the symptoms of the possible disease you have and they tell you exactly what to buy, how to threat it, what to do essentially, and it's a number not just for Corona virus, but for everything. Both numbers are generally fast, the SNS 24 had a long waiting line days ago because of the virus so they created a new number, now I think everything is alright again so the number was discarded I believe. We have very good professionals, especially nurses, most of our nurses have an extensive education, they often migrate to the UK ironically. I have total confidence in our health system. The Portuguese people took the virus very seriously after that incident in the beach, most people want to shut down everything, you don't see people on the streets, at night is a desert in any major northern city. We are a people that in general are very poor professionals, we don't have a schedule, but when sh%t gets real we deal with it like most people can't.

That sounds like an excuse for this.

Thank you. But yeah, in this case the seeming contradiction is found in the ambiguity of the language. More precise questions will yield more precise answers.

Once everyone's had it, there'll be antibodies, we'll have developed vaccines, we'll understand it better, etc. I'm not sure if it'll become equivalent to the flu, but presumably it'll be a lot closer to that even if it's not eradicated.
